CHAPTER SUMMARY A second difference is the effectiveness of Laplace transforms in handling both higher order differential equations and systems of differential equations. The latter is ‘a particularly important feature of Laplace transforms since the mechanical systems and electrical networks which one encounters in practice are often governed by more than one differential equation, One further importance of Laplace transforms is simply that they introduce the student to the idea of a transform. We shall later develop others, such as the Fourier ‘and finite Fourier (ransforms. The latier sce important action in electrical engineering. In the next chapter we set out in a different direction and develop series methods for solving differential equations. As with Laplace transforms, we shall find that series methods broaden our scope and enable us to solve exactly, or, in some cases, to approximate, solutions of problems which are at this point still beyond our means, Table of Laplace Transforms fo Fi) = 20/001 “ (s— as — 5) ~ be") orien) (= De" + (aoe + (= ae" L == che a) ia sinfat) 257 258 CHAPTER FOUR LAPLACE TRANSFORMS Table of Laplace Transforms (Continued) costa) 1 = cosa) 3 at ~ sina) aa ) 2a” sina) — a cost wa sina) + cosa cosfat) — coslon) — ae ray * sine) & costbt) sink(at) cosh(at) sinfat)cosb(at) — cos(at sinh(at) sinat) sinb(at) sinh(at)~ sin(at) cosh(at) — coxa) eu 2at) Jofaty* * J,0)s Bessel function ofthe st kind of order n s2e Chapter 6, Sections 6.1 and 6.2, Table of Laplace Transforms (Continued) Ios \ 1 = costa} 2 {1 = cosh(ary) ae" erfeta/iit ae ertta ye eta aF(as) | aFtas —b) an FFs) ~ 700) ~ 8360) if) 20) F220) anetion of the frst kindof order m (se Chapter 6 Sections 6.1 and 62) VA Je" dristheerarf omer) = 1 ~ ex) the complementary CHAPTER SUMMARY 259 260 SUMMARY OF CHAPTER FOUR LAPLACE TRANSFORMS Table of Laplace Transforms (Continued) au fs ata) Triangular sae _| Sastooth COMPUTATIONAL RULES Tait, SH =e HT, Rule 2: LF) = #F(f) — 8-4) ~ 9-37) — + — Rule 3: 1ff/(0) has period w, then 0-110) 20) Rule 4: (s-shift) Rule 5 shift) “F() Rule 6 Convolu HEAVISIDI To compu Case 1 with Case 3) F with
