CHAPTER SUMMARY
A second difference is the effectiveness of Laplace transforms in handling both
higher order differential equations and systems of differential equations. The latter is
‘a particularly important feature of Laplace transforms since the mechanical systems
and electrical networks which one encounters in practice are often governed by more
than one differential equation,
One further importance of Laplace transforms is simply that they introduce the
student to the idea of a transform. We shall later develop others, such as the Fourier
‘and finite Fourier (ransforms. The latier sce important action in electrical
engineering.
In the next chapter we set out in a different direction and develop series methods
for solving differential equations. As with Laplace transforms, we shall find that series
methods broaden our scope and enable us to solve exactly, or, in some cases, to
approximate, solutions of problems which are at this point still beyond our means,
