Rich Mongolia project

All the surveys of tourists visiting Mongolia identify the nomadic lifestyle as one of the main
attractions. Yet this lifestyle is under increasing threat as more and more herders are attracted to
the economic opportunities and better education and health care in Ulaanbaatar. The harsh
environmental conditions and competition from China make earning a livelihood from herding
increasingly difficult.
In 2007 STDC, with the tour company Active Adventure Tours Mongolia, established and
developed the project Rich Mongolia that aims to assist nomadic families, especially young
and middle age couples, to increase their annual household income. The project members,
namely nomad families can receive a herd of upto 100 sheep and breed and grow them according
to their common knowledge based on best practices for herding pastoral animals. The families
can retain all benefits from shepherding the sheep during the contracted period of 4-5 years.
So far Rich Mongolia has provided more than 2000 sheep to 32 families in 8 aimags at a cost of
USD 80 000.
But we do more for our project members and help them connect with Mongolian inbound
tour operators. Many of the nomad families have the potential to provide services like renting
horses and camels for riding, guiding tourists in the local areas, providing local meals and
traditional Gers for overnights stays. On the other hand many tour operators and their clients
want to get such services from nomads and pay them to support the local economy. So, our
organization links these 2 sides, and implement all our projects in order to minimize social and
cultural impacts and maximize economic benefits for both parties.
