“=P NF C.17-102 re reach Standard July 1995 . Classification index : © 17-102 Lightning protection Protection of structures and open areas against lightning using early streamer emission air terminals. French standard approved by AFNOR General Manager's decision dated June § 1995 to become effective as from July § 1996, vorrespondence No IEC publication or CENELEC harmonised document corresponds to. this standard. analysis This standard describes the main measures for protecting buildings egainst direct lightning strokes using an early streamer emission lightning conductor. The principle of protecting buildings against lightnieg is based on the electro-geametrical model descriptors Lightning, airtermination systems, down-conductors, earthing conductors, earth termination systems changes corrections ‘age t iffusde por Punon Technique de LEkectricié, rmnctte Laval =a place des Vorges La beFense 5, COUREVOIE- TA, 255 48 61 11-14 ttvaée également par taszoclation frangalse de normalisation lance! tour europe celex7, 92089 paris fa fense te.) 4294 55 5 ire FOREWORD This standard provides information for the state-of-the-art desion of a satisfactory lightning Protection system for structures (building, fixed facilties...) and open areas (storage areas, leisure or sports areas...) using an early streamer emission lightning conductor and provides Instructions as fo the methods fo be used for achieving such protection, As in the case with anything related to the natural elements, a lightning protection system, designed and installed in accordance with this standard, cannot guarantee absolute Protection to structures, persons or objects; however, applying this standard will significantly reduce the risk of protected structures being damaged by lightning. The decision to provide a structure with: 4 lightning protection system depends on the following factors : lightning stroke probability, severity and acceptable consequences. The selection is based on the parameters-contained in the risk assessment guide (Appendix B to this stariderd)..The risk assessment guide also indicates the appropriate protection level, Examples of structures which may need a lightning protection system aré : + buildings open to the public, ~ tower blocks and, generally, high structures (pylons, water towers, lighthouses, etc.), ~ buildings and warehouses containing dangerous materials (explosive, flammable or toxic materials, etc.), ~" buildings containing highly vulnerable or valuable equipment or documents (such as {elecommunication facilities, computers, archivés, museums, historical monuments). From the structure design stage onwards and then during the installation, particular attention should be paid to : ~ take info consideration all the items which aro to be used for making up a lightning Protection system which meets the requirements of this standard by requesting professionel, advice from those involved in the sector : designers, builders, installers, users, etc, ~ plan the complementary use of conductive items in,the structures to be protected. The measures stated in this standard are the minimum requirements for a statistically effective protection, ©17-402 - July 1995 oe
