My novel, CB, chronicles two sisters, Mary Ann and Harriet Vaughan, who are
orphaned and brought up in The Workhouse. Their lives take very different paths
in Swansea society as the sisters see life above and below stairs. They witness
kindness and cruelty, and encounter joy and despair as their lives run on parallel
lines.
To give you a taste with the above passage, CB is a big-hearted family saga of
love, loss and struggle, and is peppered with sly Welsh humour. The novel is
partially based on my own ancestry, a project I spent decades on. I dug through
old photo albums and the Swansea archives, where I found womens prison
journals written by my great aunts, Harriet and Lily.
