Tutorial 2

1. A three-phase, Y-connected, 75 MVA, 27-kV synchronous generator has a

synchronous reactance of 9.0 per phase. Using rated MVA and voltage as base
values, determine the per unit reactance. Then refer this per unit value to a 100 MVA,
30 kv base.
2. A simple power system consists of generator and motor is connected by two
transformers and a transmission line as shown in Figure 2. Choosing a base apparent
power of 100 MVA and a base line voltage at generator G1 of 13.8 kV, do the
following:
i.

Calculate the base voltage in each region.

ii.

Find the corresponding base impedances in each region.

iii.

Using per unit system, draw the impedance diagram for this power system.

3.

The one line diagram of a three phase power system is as shown in Figure 3. The
transformer reactance is 20% on a base of 100 MVA, 23/115 kV and the line
impedance is Z = j0.5 pu. The load at bus 2 is S2 = 1.848 + j0.066 pu and at bus 3 is S3
= 0 + j0.20 pu. It is required to hold the voltage at bus 3 at 1.00o pu. Working in per
unit, determine the actual voltage at buses 2 and 1.

Consider the single line diagram of a power system shown in Figure 4 with equipment
ratings given below:

13.2kV ,

20MVA, 13.8kV ,

Generator G1 : 50MVA,
Generator G 2:

3-phase -Y transformer T1 : 80MVA, 13.2 / 165Y kV ,

3phase Y- transformer T2 : 40MVA, 165Y / 13.8 kV ,

Load: Z 562.5 j 750

Choose a base of 100MVA for the system and 132-kV base in the transmission line
circuit. Draw a per-phase equivalent circuit of the system showing all impedances in
per unit.
