This is what our future looks like, what about yours?

Become a GP in Dorset by booking your place on our Leadership and Service Development
Post Graduate GP scheme. We are looking for dynamic, resourceful, creative GPs with
leadership aspirations who are looking to develop a range of skills working across a
variety of settings.
We are offering opportunities beyond the traditional salaried, locum and partner models.
Not only will you have the opportunity of general practice employment, but you will also
have the opportunity to work in other settings such as secondary care, as a GP with a
specialist interest (GPwSI), in GP education or with the LMC. In addition you will receive
funded education for the first year of the scheme. Be part of the future of primary care and
develop your skills to support and lead Dorsets exciting transformation journey.

I have lived in and worked in Bournemouth for seven years following

graduating from Southampton Medical School. During this time I have
learnt to wake board and water ski, explore the Jurassic coast and
Purbecks by foot and bike and also met my wife. I am a lover of the
outdoors and could not move away from the area due to what it offers.
I am also lucky to have a degree of flexibility of the sessions meaning I
have a week day off every fortnight as well as weekends which ensure
a good work life balance.
My working week has variety, is stretching and enables me to keep learning and developing
in my role as a GP in Dorset.
I provide 7 sessions a week as a Partner for the Lilliput Surgery, 1 session a week providing
A&E cover at Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals Foundation Trust, and 2 sessions
a week as a Safeguarding Lead working with the CCG.
Sam Abdollahian Partner GP at Lilliput Surgery, Poole A&E GP at Royal Bournemouth and
Christchurch Hospitals Foundation Trust, Safeguarding Lead for NHS Dorset CCG
The opportunities are out there in Dorset. I have found my ideal job; come and find yours.

The pathway to your perfect career

The Primary Care Workforce Centre, a collaboration between Heath Education England
Wessex, Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Bournemouth University, has
created an exciting and innovative scheme offering employment and education opportunities
for newly qualified doctors/GPs looking to develop their career.
We believe that the opportunity of working across different settings will provide doctors/GPs
with invaluable insight, experience and development that will support them to achieve their
career goals. We also believe that it is important to continue the formal education journey and
provide the opportunity to learn about leadership and service development, skills which are
vital to the NHS and the challenges it faces.

The aims of the scheme are:

Develop doctors who can deliver great services today while transforming
services for tomorrow
Develop system leaders for Dorsets Health and Social Care system
Grow and retain the most talented doctors in Dorset
The scheme is based on a model where primary employment will be within a general practice
setting, with additional added value sessions working in another setting such as a contrasting
GP practice, secondary care, out of hours, GP education or with the LMC. The model also
provides time to study and complete a funded Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and
Service Development as well as time for mentoring and personal development. Employment
will initially be on a fixed term basis for two years. Models may vary depending on individual
requirements (e.g. part time employment).

An example of a full time placement over 4 weeks could look

something like:
16 sessions of work in general practice
16 added value sessions working in another setting
2 days of funded education*
1 day of funded mentorship**
1 day of private study

*Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership & Service Development in the first year.

**Mentorship support will be provided by Programme Directors from the Centre of General Practice.

Bringing the future closer

In order to achieve a vision of providing local services that are centred around the needs of
local people Dorsets Clinical Services Review (CSR) was launched in October 2014 to analyse
the future health needs of the people of Dorset and plan how best to meet them.
This in-depth review looked at the how well our current services are working and how they
might be reorganised and improved. We looked at services in other parts of the NHS and
abroad for examples of evidence-based best practice and to see how our services compare.
Primary Care will play an important role in supporting the implementation of the
recommendations from the review, particularly when supporting new models of care and
integrated community services. This means that Primary Care in Dorset is a very exciting,
forward-thinking and transformational place to be. There are multiple examples of this
innovation across the county with many pilot schemes and new federations coming to the
fore creating opportunities for people to develop their careers.

I have been a GP Partner for over 20 years and also work as Chair of
Christchurch Locality for Dorset CCG, and I have a role as a Programme
Director for the Dorset GP Centre. These roles have allowed me to enjoy a
varied and stimulating portfolio career whilst supporting my growth and
development as a professional.
I believe that Dorset is often misrepresented - yes it has fantastic
countryside, culture and sporting facilities however, it also has a great
deal of cutting edge medical research and innovation which really makes
it stand out from the crowd. Dorset offers the opportunity to make real,
noticeable changes and improvements to the services we offer to patients
and collaborate with other services and providers in new and innovative
ways.
Theres a great deal of energy and activity in Primary Care creating lots of opportunities to
get involved in shaping and integrating services to best serve the local community. Dorset is
also a forward-thinking county with plenty of focus on ensuring the services we shape today
will be fit for the future and sustainable.
If you want to fly high in your career whilst enjoying a wonderful environment Dorset is the
place to do it.
Stephen Tomkins Partner GP at Grove Surgery, Locality Chair at Dorset CCG.
