Adjective: A word that describes a noun or a pronoun.

Spotted fawns were resting. They looked peaceful.


Three elephants were eating. Monkeys did several tricks.

Adjectives may come before the noun.

o Powerful lions stared boldly at us.


They may come after the noun.

o Giraffes seemed gentle and shy.


When two or more adjectives are listed together, you should usually use a
comma to separate them.

o Large, colorful parrots screeched.


When one of these adjectives tells how many, do not use a comma.
o Two white geese honked loudly.

Articles: A, an, the
Lets take a trip. (any trip)

Its time for the trip. (a particular trip)

Demonstrative: this, that, these, those (tells which one)


This trip will be long.

Please pass me that book.

Use this or that before singular words. Use these or those before plural words.

Comparing with adjectives


One person: My brother is tall.
Two people: My brother is taller than my sister.
Three or more: My father is the tallest in our family.

Rules for comparing with adjectives


1. One-syllable adjectives
Add er or est to the adjective
2. Adjective ending with e
Drop the e, add er or est
3. Adjectives ending with a
consonant and Y
Change the y to i and add er or
est
4. One-syllable adjectives that end
with a single vowel and a
consonant
Double the consonant & add er
or est
5. Some adjectives with two
syllables and all adjectives with
more than two syllables
Use more or most instead or er,
