0 Management of the School Organization

Element 3.2 Use resources to manage school operations
Artifact 3.2.1
Activity: Assist in scheduling classes for start of 2015-16 year.
Total Time: 5 hours
Artifact: No artifact.
Description: I worked with the principal to assign students to classes using MMS software. The
classes to be offered had already been determined, and the periods that each class would be
offered were also set up prior to my involvement. I specifically worked with the class sign-up
papers, along with the MMS software to ensure that students were assigned to the classes that
they had requested and that each students schedule was complete and ready to be given to them
on the first day of school. Although we did not finish the job, this activity allowed me to get a
basic understanding of scheduling.
Reflection: Assigning a schedule to all students in a middle/high school is a yearly activity that
the principal must go through, but it is a very important one, as school cannot function until
those schedules are complete. Doing this job well takes time, multiple weeks, since every
student wants many classes, and conflicts are sure to arise. The principal mentioned that some
schools use programs to schedule and have a goal of getting 80% of the classes assigned that
were requested by students. However, after achieving that, the work must be done by hand to
finish up. At our school, everything is done by hand since we have so few students. The classes
requested are inputted into the software, and the goal is to give every student the classes they
request. I expect that as more students get their requested classes, the more content the student
body would be as a whole. If students were found to be in classes they didnt enjoy or want, they
would likely be aggravated, annoyed, and perhaps cause difficulty. As principal, I would strive
to make a schedule that the vast majority of students are happy with.
