Activity: Staff Development with Jim Henry on Common Core math curriculum.
Total Time: 4 hours (out of a total of 62 hours; other hours are in 2.3.1)
Artifact: Files we created.
Description: Jim Henry and I were commissioned to develop math checklists and curriculum
guides for teachers from grade 1 through algebra 1 (approx. grades 1 9). This was done over 2
weeks, for 30 hours per week. The hope was that teachers use the checklists to ensure that
theyve covered the standards required for each grade, therefore ensuring a smooth grade-tograde transition with regard to mathematics topics. We also were to provide reference materials
and pathways for teachers to implement the content standards and the Standards for
Mathematical Practice. Finally, we were to give a one hour staff development at the start of
school so that teachers felt more comfortable using the standards and the materials that are
provided. The files provided as artifacts are examples for specific grades. We created files for
every grade from 1-9, but I did not include all of them here.
Reflection: These four hours represent the end of the staff development activity. Here, we
simply put the binders together as resources for teachers, made our electronic files available for
teachers, and got organized for presenting what we had done to teachers on the first day of
school. Although Ive already written a reflection on this activity in 2.3.1, I will add that I
thought this staff development was very important, because I dont think all of our teachers were
very well aware of PA Core and what a dramatic change it is.
