Skittles Term Project
The Skittles Term Project was a project that allowed us to demonstrate our knowledge of
statistics using a real life experiment. In this experiment we each counted the quantity of each
colored skittle to determine the probability of the colors. This was done by using a 2.17 ounce
bag of original skittles, and organizing each color into section and counting them out. After, we
organized the data into a table to make our calculations easier. By doing this experiment the
results demonstrate strategies such as confidence interval, hypothesis testing, standard deviation
etc.
The graphs representing the data reflect the expected results of the proportions
hypothesized of each color. Through observing the data in a pie chart and table, the data seemed
to be very close and similar to each other, there was no visible outliers. It is all evenly distributed
in the pie chart overall. The class data also seemed very close to the individual data collected.
Red and purple seemed to be high numbers within individual data and the class data.
The shape of the distribution is almost bell shaped but not quite, it is skewed to the left in
the box plot. There is on set of data that is a visible outlier in the histogram, this could be from
not counting broken candies (the broken ones did not count). The graph reflected similar what I
expected to see except for the outlier in the histogram. The overall data from the classroom

agrees with the individual data I collected. My bag had 64 candies, which is similar to the class
set of data.
Categorical data can be organized into number. Qualitative data is another term or way to
describe categorical data. Quantitative data cannot be organized into number but labels such as
name or color. For categorical data most graphs make sense. However for quantitative data the
graphs that make sense are histograms or bar graphs, other charts don't have meaning without
number. Names and colors cannot be organized into anything numerical that have meaning. The
mean, standard deviation etc only make sense using the qualitative data.
