Proof
Thiswillbeanintuitiveproofbyconstruction.Weshallbegintoplacepointsintotheboxuntilitis
impossibletoaddanymore.Firstimagineacircleofradiusdaroundeachpointrepresentingtheareathat
wearenotallowedtoinsertanotherpointinto.Wecanminimizetheoverlappingareaofsuchacircle
withtherectanglebyplacingthepointonthecorneroftherectangleasinthefollowingfigure:

Hencewecanplacepointssomewhereinsidethelightblueareaorontheedgesofthecircles.Hencewe
putonemoreinthemiddleoftheleftsideleavingtheentireboxcoveredexceptfortheremainingtwo
cornersandthemiddleoftherightside(allthreeofthesepointsbeingrightontheboundariesofthe
circles).Oncewedothiswehavethefollowingstructure:

Notethattherearenowsixpointsinthesquare.Ifyoutrytomoveanyoneofthesepointsinany
directionwithintheboundariesoftherectangle,thenyouwouldbemovingtwopointstooclose
toghether.
Hencewecan'tpossiblyaddanymorepointstothisrectanglewithoutputtingviolatingthedistance
propertybetweenthepoints.Thereforesixisthemaximumnumberofpointswecanhave.
