Julia Volker and Armin Scholls piece, Do the Media Fail to Represent Reality?
conveys the idea that media viewers watch may be biased. The authors introduce this idea to
readers by describing the ways media can be biased, or not display the entire truth of issues, by
only broadcasting partial information of issues to the audience. Volker and Scholl explain that
media scholars are always looking to keep the media honest. Throughout the article, the authors
describe the point of view in which the research is analyzed, as well as studies conducted to
prove that media bias affects the way viewers act or think. The two studies conducted include
Study of Boykoff & Boykoff and Study of Maurer. The authors tie all of the different
studies, viewpoints and ideas together in the conclusion by stating studies suggest media bias
leads to one sided opinions of viewers that are concluded because of the limited amount of
information included in media.
The idea conveyed in Do the Media Fail to Represent Reality? speaks volumes
regarding bias in the media and the influence this bias has on thoughts and opinions of viewers.
The authors are writing to media viewers to alert them of this bias, and assure them that
measures are being taken. Throughout the article, the authors discuss studies conducted as well
as their results to support their ideas. There was a limited amount of bias due to the fact that the
authors were biased towards their own argument, but they analyzed their research through many
points of view. This article benefits our research because it is about the way bias in the media
affects viewers opinions or actions regarding certain issues, in our case the portrayal of addicts.
It is important to our research because it supports our idea that media coverage of addicts creates
fear among viewers because the way in which the media portrays addicts makes them seem
monstrous.
