Passport photo requirements


You must make s ure photos for y our passport, driving licence o r visa meet all the rules - y our application
might be delayed if y ou dont.

Check y our application form to s ee how many photos y ou need to provide.

Photo size
Your photos must be professionally printed and 4 5 millimetres (mm) high by 35mm w ide - the s tandard
size used in photo booths in the UK. Standard s izes in photo booths o utside the UK can be different - make
sure y ou g et the right s ize.

You cant use photos that have been cut down from larger pictures.

The photos
Your photos must be:
in colour o n plain w hite photographic paper
taken against a plain cream o r light g rey background
identical
taken w ithin the last month
clear and in focus
without any tears o r creases
unmarked o n both s ides (unless a photo needs to be countersigned)
unaltered by computer s oftware

The image of you


Your photos must s how a close-up o f y our full head and s houlders. It must be o nly o f y ou w ith no o ther
objects o r people.
The image o f y ou - from the crown o f y our head to y our chin - must be between 29mm and 34mm high (see
example below).

Your photos may be rejected unless they s how y ou:


facing forward and looking s traight at the camera
with a neutral expression and y our mouth closed
without anything covering the face
in clear contrast to the background
without a head covering (unless its w orn for religious o r medical reasons)
with eyes o pen, visible and free from reflection o r g lare from g lasses
with y our eyes not covered by s unglasses, tinted g lasses, g lasses frames o r hair
without any red eye
without any s hadows in the picture

Photos of children
Children must be o n their o wn in the picture. Babies must not be holding toys o r using dummies.
Children under 6 dont have to be looking directly at the camera o r have a neutral expression.
Children under 1 dont have to have their eyes o pen. If their head is s upported by a hand, the hand mustnt be
visible in the photo.
