Chapter 9 Discussion Questions 2

1.) Qualcomm should consider many different development activities to continuously
improve its leadership development programs. In addition to Qualcomms current
programs, the company should employ job rotation as a development of skill set. By
rotating employees through various aspects of the business, employees can gain
leadership experience employing methods learned in the seminars. Mentoring is another
developmental activity that Qualcomm should consider. By pairing executives in the
Executive Leadership Essentials program with managers in the Leadership Skills
program, the company would improve the amount of experience in leadership. Both
executives and managers would have the opportunity to gain knowledge from each other,
due to the different natures of their jobs.
2.) A manager tasked with helping a remote health clinic would be an effective development
experience due to the challenging nature of the task. There are many aspects that would
need to be considered, including the transfer of information. The manager would need to
coordinate with different aspects of the company, including accounting and human
resources, to manage the technology and personnel needed to take on such a task. This
would give the manager leadership experience through direct contact with different
business functions. Managerial skills and competencies that could be improved through
such a task include cross cultural awareness, organizational skills, self-confidence, and
leadership skills. The manager would need to ensure that cultural differences are
managed carefully, but the manager would gain knowledge and experience in working
with a culture different from their own. Organizational skills would be either obtained or
refined in managing the logistics of such a task. The managers self-confidence would
increase upon completion, and the leadership skills learned through the experience could
benefit the entire company.
