A. What are limitations on copyright?

Though copyright law provides a creator with several critical and powerful rights over
their work, those rights are not unlimited. The law has always recognized the need to
balance the rights of the copyright holder with the good of the public and provisions in
the law have aimed to do exactly that.
B. Why does the law limit copyright?
When a copyright expires, the work falls into the public domain. In the public domain,
the work is considered to be a part of our cultural heritage and is not subject to any
copyright limitations. This means that anyone can exploit a work for both commercial
and non-commercial gain.
C. What are the economic rights of authors, as prescribed in the law?
Authors rights are a part of copyright law. The economic rights are a property
right which is limited in time and which may be transferred by the author to other people
in the same way as any other property (although many countries require that the transfer
must be in the form of a written contract).
D. How can one own a copyright?
If a work is created by an employee in the course of his or her employment, the employer
owns the copyright. When two or more authors prepare a work with the intent to combine
their contributions into inseparable or interdependent parts, the work is considered joint
work and the authors are considered joint copyright owners.

E. To whom can copyright be transferred or assigned? How can this be done?

The person who owns a copyright is sometimes referred to as having title to the copyright.
A title is the document that establishes ownership to property, like the title to your car or
house. But even in the absence of an official document, the owner of a copyright is often said
to have title to it. Just like title to your car or house, title to a copyright can be sold or sferred.
A person or company can have ownership (title) of a copyright transferred to it by means of
an assignment (a sale in which all or part of a copyright is transferred) or through a will or
bankruptcy proceedings. Since title to a copyright can be transferred, you may have to search
copyright records to determine the current owner of a work you want to use.
