The world-famous structure with its gigantic dimensions and rich

furnishings has a breathtaking effect on its visitors even today. After the
foundation stone was laid in 1248, it took more than 600 years until the
Cathedral was finished in the 19th century. The many well-preserved
stained-glass windows and the golden glow of the Shrine of the Three
Kings determine the appearance of the interior first and foremost.
Another attraction enriching the Cathedral since 2007 is the highly
regarded and controversial window by Gerhard Richter.

DIE KLSCHE SCHMIER

AN INTERACTIVE CITY GAME

Duration: 2.5 3 hours plus

1 hour for the awards ceremony
Fee:
34.50 per person in English
Group size:
min. 15 persons
Booking code: 87005

Klsche Schmier (Cologne Coppers) is a city game based on a true event.

In 1996 a valuable processional cross was stolen from the Cathedral
treasury. To call a halt to this sacrilege, church and police turned to the
king of the Cologne underworld Schfers Nas (the Cologne dialect for
Schfers nose, referring to the size of same!). He immediately decreed:
Thats a no-go! Give the cross back or therell be trouble! The threat
worked just a short time later, the crucifix was back in the treasury and
the Cathedral dean included Schfers Nas in his prayers.
This game requires at least three teams of five persons. The team of robbers flees after stealing the crucifix and the other teams chase the thieves
through Colognes city centre, while solving diverse tasks and mysterious
riddles. During your hunt for the Cathedral treasure, you will research
curious facts about the citys 2000-year history, discover hidden attractions and encounter the typical Cologne sense of humour and mentality.

Duration: 2 hours
Fee:

Booking code: 88004

With this lively coach tour you will travel through time, from Roman
Cologne to the present day. The two-hour tour in an ultramodern coach
combines sightseeing with historical photographs, films and audio
material presented on monitors. A guide moderates the tour, commenting on short clips presented on the screens in synchronization with the
respective view through the window. This makes it possible for you to
compare present day and historic views, for instance. Youll be able to
see the interior of buildings, hear Cologne music and experience historic
events and personalities audio-visually. You will see Cologne with completely new eyes.

South of Bonn on the east bank of the

Rhine lies the picturesque wine town of Knigswinter. From here you can
visit Germanys first nature reserve, Siebengebirge. High above is Hotel
Petersberg, which in the course of history was often the arena for political
talks during the Afghanistan Conference in 2001, for example. With
the worlds oldest rack railway, on a donkey, or on foot you can ascend
Drachenfels to its Romanesque castle ruins. From there you will be able to
enjoy a magnificent view of the Rhine Valley. Halfway up Drachenfels you
can visit Schloss Drachenburg, which the Bonn stockbroker Stephan von
Sarter had erected in the late 19th century. Today it houses a bizarre museum that presents the story of the Nibelungen, amongst other things.*

The much extolled beauty of the Rhine becomes quickly evident on this
trip along the river. Numerous castles line the Rhine Valley. Vineyards on
steep slopes and picturesque villages invite you to wine tastings. Two
of the most beautiful Rhine castles, rediscovered in the period of Rhine
romanticism are Marksburg above Braubach near Koblenz and Stolzenfels Castle, which was erected by Karl-Friedrich Schinkel within the old
Romanesque foundations of the former castle. We will pass original sites
of German history such as the former imperial stronghold Burg Hammerstein, into which Henry IV fled from his son, with the crown insignia.
Often there are tragic sagas surrounding the Rhine and its castles, above
all that of the Lorelei. On this tour they come alive again. Whats the deal
with the hostile brothers, the mouse tower or the seven stone virgins? If
you ask yourself like Heinrich Heine did, I know not, what does it mean
then you will find some answers on this tour.*

After a stroll through the narrow lanes of the old town of Bonn, the
charm of this 2000-year-old city will enrapture you. You will quickly
understand why Casanova regarded Bonn so highly. Not least was surely
its quality of a royal capital that essentially still characterizes the city
today. The Cologne archbishop-electors Joseph Clemens and Clemens
August from the Wittelsbach dynasty erected the imposing town hall as
well as the palaces, which the university still uses today. In 1770 Ludwig
van Beethoven, Bonns most famous son, saw the light of day. At the
early age of 14, he played the organ at the court of Elector Clemens
August. For more than 100 years his birthplace has served as a museum.
Only a few steps away, the Romanesque minster of Saints Cassius and
Florentius dominates Mnsterplatz.
During the coach tour you will also be able to view the meanwhile historic
sites of German federal politics. We will pass the Haus der Geschichte der
Deutschen Bundesrepublik (House of German History) where Konrad
Adenauers official car is on exhibit, for instance and see the last plenary
hall, today a conference centre. Flanking your path are other former
government embassy buildings of the past as well as some of the ministries that did not move to Berlin. If you like, you can also visit the Bundeskunsthalle (Art and Exhibition Hall) to conclude your Bonn experience.*
*If you are not travelling in your own coach, we will be glad to book a
coach for you (at an additional charge).

Fascinating about Colognes newest quarter is its unmistakeable origin as a

harbour that was converted into a high-quality commercial and residential
area. In addition to the former port authority, historical warehouses and
old cranes as technical monuments, the so-called crane houses and other
new buildings dominate the picture. The quarter is essentially characterized by office buildings such as that of Microsoft, residential complexes, the
artotel and restaurants. The Rhine quay has become a popular promenade that stretches along the whole length of the historical harbour.

As early as the Roman period water

played an important role in Cologne even wastewater was treated
specially. In the Middle Ages, in contrast, people handled water quite
carelessly until the 19th century when the city developed modern
systems. The Rhine always held great significance, above all as a trade
and transportation route. It was the origin for the immense economic
upswing of Cologne since the Roman period. In Cologne you will also find
completely different kinds of water such as Klsch (the local beer), Eau de
Cologne and thermal water, which almost led to Cologne being named a
spa. After this unusual tour you will take to Cologne like a duck to water!

In the new building opened in 2001 you will experience highlights of European painting. The museum has one of the most significant collections of
medieval paintings, including outstanding works such as Stefan Lochners
Madonna in the Rose Bower. Amongst others, Rembrandt and Rubens
represent baroque painting. Exemplary for the 19th century are German
romanticism and French realism. In the same year the museum reopened,
it acquired the Fondation Corboud, which supplements the collection

The church dedicated to St. Ursula is linked to the legend of the 11,000
virgins who are said to have suffered their martyrdom here in Cologne.
Since many bones were found in its vicinity, the church has an outstanding position in this legend. To house the relics the Golden Chamber was
built in the 17th century. This reliquary chapel is lined with bones from
top to bottom.

This guided tour combines the walking tour in the old town (see description
above) with a visit to Colognes most famous edifice. During the Cathedral
tour tailored to the respective age group, the pupils hear a bit about the
construction of the Cathedral and why it took so long to complete. They
learn to understand pictures and symbols and discover how the Cathedral
was used in former times and which functions it has today.
