With this lively coach tour you will travel through time, from Roman
Cologne to the present day. The two-hour tour in an ultramodern coach
combines sightseeing with historical photographs, films and audio
material presented on monitors. A guide moderates the tour, commenting on short clips presented on the screens in synchronization with the
respective view through the window. This makes it possible for you to
compare present day and historic views, for instance. Youll be able to
see the interior of buildings, hear Cologne music and experience historic
events and personalities audio-visually. You will see Cologne with completely new eyes.

The much extolled beauty of the Rhine becomes quickly evident on this
trip along the river. Numerous castles line the Rhine Valley. Vineyards on
steep slopes and picturesque villages invite you to wine tastings. Two
of the most beautiful Rhine castles, rediscovered in the period of Rhine
romanticism are Marksburg above Braubach near Koblenz and Stolzenfels Castle, which was erected by Karl-Friedrich Schinkel within the old
Romanesque foundations of the former castle. We will pass original sites
of German history such as the former imperial stronghold Burg Hammerstein, into which Henry IV fled from his son, with the crown insignia.
Often there are tragic sagas surrounding the Rhine and its castles, above
all that of the Lorelei. On this tour they come alive again. Whats the deal
with the hostile brothers, the mouse tower or the seven stone virgins? If
you ask yourself like Heinrich Heine did, I know not, what does it mean
then you will find some answers on this tour.*

After a stroll through the narrow lanes of the old town of Bonn, the
charm of this 2000-year-old city will enrapture you. You will quickly
understand why Casanova regarded Bonn so highly. Not least was surely
its quality of a royal capital that essentially still characterizes the city
today. The Cologne archbishop-electors Joseph Clemens and Clemens
August from the Wittelsbach dynasty erected the imposing town hall as
well as the palaces, which the university still uses today. In 1770 Ludwig
van Beethoven, Bonns most famous son, saw the light of day. At the
early age of 14, he played the organ at the court of Elector Clemens
August. For more than 100 years his birthplace has served as a museum.
Only a few steps away, the Romanesque minster of Saints Cassius and
Florentius dominates Mnsterplatz.
During the coach tour you will also be able to view the meanwhile historic
sites of German federal politics. We will pass the Haus der Geschichte der
Deutschen Bundesrepublik (House of German History) where Konrad
Adenauers official car is on exhibit, for instance and see the last plenary
hall, today a conference centre. Flanking your path are other former
government embassy buildings of the past as well as some of the ministries that did not move to Berlin. If you like, you can also visit the Bundeskunsthalle (Art and Exhibition Hall) to conclude your Bonn experience.*
*If you are not travelling in your own coach, we will be glad to book a
coach for you (at an additional charge).

medieval paintings, including outstanding works such as Stefan Lochners
Madonna in the Rose Bower. Amongst others, Rembrandt and Rubens
represent baroque painting. Exemplary for the 19th century are German
romanticism and French realism. In the same year the museum reopened,
it acquired the Fondation Corboud, which supplements the collection

ST. GEREON

The core of this church is a late Roman building, which was expanded to
monumental dimensions in the Middle Ages. Linked with the legend of
St. Gereon, it was one of Colognes most important religious edifices.
In spite of many losses and much destruction, particularly during the
Second World War, St. Gereon is still a highlight amongst Colognes
churches.

In the 11th century, one of this epochs most significant churches was
realized on the site of the Roman Capitoline Temple. Abbess Ida of the
Ottonian dynasty had the truly imperial structure erected. Its wooden
Romanesque doors with scenes from the life of Christ stem from around
1065. After the devastating destruction in the Second World War, the
church was reconstructed in its original forms.

The church dedicated to St. Ursula is linked to the legend of the 11,000
virgins who are said to have suffered their martyrdom here in Cologne.
Since many bones were found in its vicinity, the church has an outstanding position in this legend. To house the relics the Golden Chamber was
built in the 17th century. This reliquary chapel is lined with bones from
top to bottom.

This guided tour combines the walking tour in the old town (see description
above) with a visit to Colognes most famous edifice. During the Cathedral
tour tailored to the respective age group, the pupils hear a bit about the
construction of the Cathedral and why it took so long to complete. They
learn to understand pictures and symbols and discover how the Cathedral
was used in former times and which functions it has today.
