Course Reflection
I originally enrolled in this class because it sounded like the best option
to fill a Humanities requirement. After a few weeks of reading the material
and completing discussions, I started getting more interested in what was
coming up next. The videos included each week were also very helpful for
applying the theory of what was being taught to real life situations and
people. I specifically benefited from the theories, groupthink, and Social
Penetration.
Groupthink tends to be a part of human nature. Many people without even
processing it tend to follow the popular thing at the time. I also had the
opportunity to analyze the Social Penetration Theory. I found this theory so
relevant and interesting to everyday relationships and the communication
involved. There are times when small talk has seemed pointless in the past.
After learning more about this theory I understand the importance of selfdisclosure beyond superficial facts and the common curiosity of small talk for
others. Small talk is in the orientation stage, the first stage of the Social
Penetration Theory that allows others to begin feeling safe to bring down
their barriers and create relationships. The following includes my Theory
Analysis Paper on The Social Penetration Theory and requirements involved.
