Teaching Strategies:
Graphic Organizer word match chart
1. Explain that these 2 suffixes both indicate action, quality, or
condition, and usually change verbs or adjectives to nouns. Give
the examples: direct/direction and reduce/reduction.
2. Teach steps for figuring out meanings of words with suffixes
- Figure out meaning of root/base word
- Identify suffix. Ask, What does this suffix mean?
- Put the suffix meaning together with the root word meaning.
3. Model with Think Aloud on Journeys Teacher Manual p. T260.
Pass out copy of Projectable 4.5 and have students circle or
highlight words with suffixes. Then, they list the words in
columns below.
4. Discuss how each words suffix changes its meaning.
5. Pass out word parts cards and word match chart. Students match
a suffix with a root/base word, write the word, and use it in a
sentence on handout.
Summarizing Strategy:
Explain how you would figure out the meaning of this word:

competition

On the back of this page, explain how you would figure

out the meaning of the word competition.
Word Sort Cards
Copy these onto card stock or laminate them. Cut out each set of suffixes and root words
and put them in an envelope. Students try to match the suffixes with root words to create
new words. They should realize that for some root words, letters at the end will be dropped
in order to add the suffix. For these words, the suffix cards should overlap and cover the
letters that will be dropped. Use these cards with the word sort chart.
