Directions (Q. 1-10):Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it.
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi took charge on May 26, 2014, the world looked at him with
high expectations. This was because not only did his party the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP)
manage to emerge as a single majority party with 282 seats to form the coalition government, but
India was also in direneed of a strong leader who could steer the country towards the path of
growth and bring in renewed hope and optimism to a crumbling conomy. With NDA coming to
power, it seemed in 30 years India had finally voted for a strong and effective government. During
his campaign; Modi had strongly voiced his opinion about the lackluster performance of the
previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. His manifesto had laid stress on bringing
down inflation, renewing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and retrieving black money from
abroad, among other initiatives.
As the government completes 100 days, one thing that emerges is that Modi walked the talk when
he spoke about minimum government and maximizing governance. His ministry has a clear, flat
structure he is the head and his ministers mostly below 75 years directly under him, where
he keeps a strict eye on them. He has made it clear that his government wants to do away with
the Planning Commission and replace it with a think tank. As soon as he assumed power, he made
efforts to bring in efficiency government officials now reach office on time and are putting in
atleast 12 hours; any purchase above one lakh is sent to the Prime Minister Office (PMO) for
approval; cars and foreign travels have been restricted and allowed only when required. Modi has
become synonymous with the BJP-led government and time and again proved that he means
business, along with speaking inspiring words that he has a penchant for. The ministries under
www.ibpsadda.com

http://ssconlineexam.com

Page 13

Modi have been trying to keep pace with his dynamism. The Human Resources Development
Ministry headed by SmritiI rani has notable achievements like her initiative towards establishing
the National Academy Depository for maintaining academic degrees and certificates in e-format,
thus reducing paper work and saving considerable time. The ministry also plans to make about 20
classrooms in 21,000 colleges Wi-Fi enabled. The oil and gas ministry has also done its bit in terms
of regulating the prices and major price hikes have been avertedto a certain extent. Also, there
are attempts being made to reduce the price gap between petrol and diesel. Hundred days may be
too soon to judge the performance of a government because the benefits of some of the steps
undertaken may only be realized in the long run. During these days, the government has been
busy picking up tasks from the manifesto and ticking them. However, all their actions are not
without criticism.

Directions (Q. 11 - 20) : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given
below it. Launching his governments first big ticket social welfare program, the Pradhan Mantri
Jan Dhan Yojana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday gave a call for eradicating what he
termed as financial untouchability of the poor by openingat least one bank account for every
family in the country in less than six months. This essentially means opening a whopping 7.5 crore
bank accounts, the process for which was kick started on Thursday with 1.5 crore accounts 50
lakh over the intended target on inaugural day. As per government figures, around 10 crore
families do not have a bank account. If crores of Indians are outside the ambit of organized
financial services because they do not have a bank account even after 68 years of independence,
we call it financial untouchability. Gandhiji ended social untouchability, it is our mission to
eradicate this kind of untouchability now to fight poverty, While the initial aim was to include
every beneficiary in the program within one
year, the deadline was advanced as Modi, who announced the scheme in his Independence
Day speech at Red Fort, expressed his desire for the process to be concluded by the next
Republic Day.
The Jan Dhan Yojana provides for a free zero-balance bank account with a debit card, `1 lakh
accidental insurance policy and `30,000 free medical insurance cover for those who enroll before
January 26, 2015. Depending on the performance of the accounts in the first six months, banks will
later extend a `5,000 overdraft facility, thereby turning the debit card into a kind of credit card.
The debit card is being issued by RuPay of the National Payments Corporation of India. PM said a
mammoth initiative like this would go a long way in granting global acceptance to the RuPay
brand, in line with international retail credit giants like Visa and others. In the subsequent phases
of the program, the Indian postal departments network will also be roped in to provide banking

services in the remote areas. The system will also become a channel for remitting micro pension.
Banks queue up at the houses of the rich to extend loans at cheaper rates. Nothings wrong with
that. Its business. But they do not extend the same courtesy to the poor. So the poor take loans
from rich money-lenders at five times the market rate. Many poor farmers fail to repay because
the loan is so expensive and then some of them commit suicide when all is lost. This is a vicious
cycle. This program is the first step towards breaking that cycle."
