Reflective Writing
The American Music and Culture class at Salt Lake Community
College has an educational value far beyond that of Americas ways
and songs. It has taught me about the sociology behind music and
culture as well. Which really makes a person think more about what
goes on behind those noises that we hear everyday. It also taught me
to appreciate other cultures, music, and classifications for what they
are. It helped me to see the gem within every song, even when that
song doesnt resonate well with me personally.
For example, while taking this class I heard an artist in my free
time that I normally wouldnt give much credit, Die Antwoord. But I
started picking apart all the little details of their songs and began to
realize in some ways these guys are actually musical geniuses,
whether I like their style or not. This class made me want to learn more
about why their music sounds the way it does, is it because they are
from South Africa? Is it because the represent the Zef counter culture
movement?
Many of the influences in music can be drawn from varying
sociological factors. This can make for some very interesting
conversations, and theories about music. This class also taught me
how all encompassing the subject of sociology and music is. Sociology
