Some people argue that imposing laws has an effect on human behaviour,
while others believe that this is not the case. I strongly believe that having
rules in our society does indeed have some positive effects, this essay will
discuss in more detail about these effects.
First and foremost, penalties help to reduce criminal rate, since they
provide less incentive for criminals to commit crimes. People have to think
twice before they make a decision to rob a bank, or to kill someone. One
clear of example of this is Sweden, it was found that there was only one
shooting incident in Sweden last year; it has remained a peaceful country
for hundreds of years. Whereas, nearly one hundred murder cases are
discovered in Mexico on a monthly basis. The main difference between
these two countries is that Sweden has a set of enforceable rules imposed
on its citizens; in contrast, Mexican government is reluctant to enforce any
law.
Moreover, some reputable economists at Monash university have recently
discovered the relationship between the criminal rate and legal policies
through empirical research. These researchers analyse the impact of
having death penalty on the criminal rate among different countries, and
it was found that criminal rate has a negative exponential relationship
with the severity of the penalties. They concluded that death penalty has
some psychological impacts on criminals behaviours in certain nations
due to the fear of death. For instance, drug related crimes are less severe
in Asian countries, compared to Australia.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that legal policies are extremely crucial to
the national prosperity, thus every country should have a stable set of
rules to keep their citizens safe.
