The Volkswagen scandal has put a negative impact on the entire automotive industry and

German companies operating abroad have observed a decrease in their sales. Such a scandal has
completely violated the ecological, environmental rights and market approaches of
environmental pollution.
The automotive industry should take this as a serious act of violation regarding ethical
environmental rights. They ought to follow the ecological ethics in every engine design which is
either in progress or is yet to be designed. They should understand that economic sustainability,
environmental sustainability, social sustainability are independent. Players in the automotive
industry should implement environmental ethics in their strategy should chose the action which
produces the greatest sum total of utility for the environment and society.
Moreover, automotive industry should avoid any lobbying to delay the implementation of UN
sanctioned vehicle test which would reflect real life driving situations. Rather, they should be
supportive of any such vehicle test approved globally. Automotive industry must implement the
precautionary principle in their strategy while designing the engines for vehicle coming in near
future and they should reject any practice that carries an unknown risk of irreversible
consequences. Automotive industry should implement the principle of Jidoka, which focuses on
automation with a human touch. The quality control department in the automotive industry must
follow four step process- detect the defect, stop, fixing the issues involved and investigating the
root cause and installing the countermeasure. Automotive industry should also invest and focus
more on the research and development of technologies which could hamper pollution caused by
vehicles.
Volkswagen and other players in the automotive industry should engage in practices which could
minimize the effects of air pollution and respiratory problems caused due to the use of defeat
device.
