Flowers of the Four Seasons are a group of flowers in Chinese art and culture which

represent the four seasons, consisting of the Peony (spring), the Lotus (summer), the
Chrysanthemum (autumn) and the Plum Blossom (winter). In Chinese decorative arts each
of these flowers are representations for various aspects of life.
This Four Season woodcarving is a personal art collection of the gallerys Founder, and one
of his favourites.

SPRING
The beauty and meaning of the Peony (: m dn) has served as inspiration for artists in both
Eastern and Western cultures. The peony, China's "Queen of Flowers" is called flower of wealth and
honor which symbolizes longevity, loyalty, happiness and eternal beauty. Chinese style art often
utilize the peony design, along with butterflies, which symbolize a happy and lasting relationship
and also brings good luck to everyone.

SUMMER
The Lotus (: lin hu) is highly valued in Chinese culture. It is also invoked in the practice of
Fng-shu to bring good energy into the house. Untouched by any impurities, the lotus symbolizes
purity of the heart and mind and represents long life, humility, honor and tranquillity.

AUTUMN
Chrysanthemum (: Ju Hua) symbolizes fidelity, optimism, joy and long life. A red
chrysanthemum conveys love; a white chrysanthemum symbolizes truth and loyal love while a
yellow chrysanthemum symbolizes slighted love. In Ancient Chinese culture, chrysanthemum was
said to symbolize nobility, elegance and virtues of a man due to its ability to withstand the
colder temperature as the season is turning to winter.

WINTER
Plum Blossoms (: Mi Hu) usually bloom by the end of winter to symbolize life, rebirth and
growth while other plants shed their leaves in the cold weather. The plum blossom was admired as
an icon of endurance and perseverance. The flowers also brings wealth, luck, health, longevity and
positive development. In Chinese art, Plum Blossoms along with birds symbolize a happy and lasting
relationship and brings good luck to everyone.
