GIRLS

BASKETBALL
2016-2017

TEAM PRINCIPLES
Purpose Statement:
The Girls Basketball Program is here to prepare tomorrows leaders
by developing athletic teams, which pursue excellence by
strengthening the athletes character, developing excellent
teamwork, instilling great work habits, teaching, stressing and
monitoring the importance of Academics.
Pursuing the Ultimate. Adding Up the Good.
Basketball and being part of a team provides many things worthy
of pursuing: region championships, state championships, college
scholarships, recognition and rewards. We want to enjoy the
journey and build strong relationships.
The Charger Way
1. We will honor the school motto Semper Excelsius in all that we
do, by striving to always be better.
2. We desire that our players will leave this program as strong,
responsible leaders.
3. We will stress the primacy of academics and know that
students are here first and foremost to become great
students.
4. We will run a disciplined program where dedicated players
compete with great attitude and relentless effort, sacrificing
personal gain for the teams achievement.
5. We will work hard and work with an organized purpose in
practice, creating physical and mental toughness to prepare
for competition.

6. Coaches will be quality role models that coach with focus,

enthusiasm and love for their players and the game of
basketball.
7. We all will always voice solutions not complaints or just an
opinion.
Charger Basketball Desires to Teach the Joy That Comes
From:
Being committed to something bigger than yourself
Sacrificing for others
Working hard on and off the court

Player Expectations
Do not get involved with or do anything that would ever reflect
negatively on your family or compromise the integrity of the
athletes or coaches of our team.
Everything you do reflects on our team, school and community.
Any violation of this policy can result in suspension or expulsion
from the team.
Loyalty
You are expected to be loyal to your team and to your coaches at
all times. Understand the importance of being a part of the
Charger family.
Character
The true reflection of a person comes when they are behind closed
doors and out of the publics eye. Take pride in being a morally
strong person. Be a leader by positive example. A persons
reputation is important, but character is her true worth.
Respect

Trust that all the decisions made by the coaching staff are in the
best interest of the team. One of the goals of the coaching staff is
to make this team the best it can possibly be. No coach will
compromise the success of the team for an individual.
School Policies
All policies as outlined by the Charger Student Handbook apply to
our program. We are leaders of the community as well as the
student body. Team members are subject to all rules and
regulations of Corner Canyon High School. We will adhere to these
policies and set the standard on this campus.

Team Spirit
We want no one man players, no stars. We want a team made
up of five student/athletes playing at a time. Players offensive
roles will not be identical. Some players will be asked to look to
score while other players may be asked to look to pass.
Defensively, everyone is expected to give their all. Defense is
90% effort and 10% ability. There is no excuse to not be a great
defender.
We want a team of fighters. Respect everyone, but fear no one.
We dont want to be cocky or conceited, a team that plays hard,
plays fair, and plays to win always remembering that a team that
wont be beaten cant be beaten. We want our team to believe
that, A winner never quits and quitters never win. Make your
mind up before the game that you wont lose, that you can
outsmart and outfight the opposing team. In other words, if you
have the confidence in your teams ability to win, you will be
plenty tough enough to win.
Others may be faster than you, larger than you, and have far more
ability than you have, but no one should ever be your superior in
team spirit, fight, determination, ambition, and character.

Although winning games is always a goal, our focus is on

improving and getting better game-to-game and season-toseason. If we improve on a constant basis, winning games will be
a natural result.
Classroom Expectations
Conduct yourself properly and show respect to your teachers. Do
not allow a poor attitude, misbehavior or poor attendance to get
you into trouble. You are responsible for your behavior and
academic performance, not your coaches. Players who have
problems in this area will NOT represent the team.
Athletes not giving maximum effort and attitude in the
classroom will be held accountable.
All athletes will be subject to regular study halls and grade
checks during the season when deemed necessary by the
coaching staff.

Sportsmanship
It is our opportunity as coaches, parents, and players to model
sportsmanship at all times in and out of the gym. Our goal is to
promote citizenship in action by being courteous to all
participants, coaches, officials, staff and fans. We will win and lose
with character as we display our appreciation for self-control
regardless of the situation, knowing that our behavior reflects
directly on our school and community.
Drugs & Alcohol
It is impossible to be at your mental and physical best if you use
drugs or alcohol. Both reduce your chances to become as
physically fit, as you need to be. To be the best basketball player
you can be, you need the mental advantage of knowing you are

doing everything possible to enhance your teams chances of

being successful. Dont use drugs or alcohol!
As a team we will adhere to the UHSAA guidelines and regulations
when it comes to any issues that relate to drug and alcohol use.
Please reference their manual for further information if needed.

Charger Definition of Success:
Unselfishly giving and developing your best everyday.
It is measured in comparison to our best selves, not in relation
to others.

Team Expectations
Absence from Team Practices and Activities
Excused Absences
An absence is excused if the player notifies Coach Acker in advance
and he approves the absence.
Absences are strongly discouraged as it disrupts the team, team
chemistry, drills, etc.
Excused absences might include but are not limited to family
emergencies, medical emergencies, special academic opportunities,
and once in a lifetime opportunities.

Work is not an excused absence.

Athletes who miss the practice prior to a game with an excused
absence may sit out at least one quarter of that game depending on
the circumstances for the absence.
Unexcused Absences
An absence is unexcused if the player does not notify Coach Acker
before the absence occurs, or does not provide the proper written
documentation indicating the reason for absence signed by the
parent/guardian of the player.
If an unexcused absence occurs for a practice prior to a game, the
player will not be allowed to play in that game. If missing practices
becomes habitual, then the coach staff and athlete will meet to
evaluate the athletes commitment to the program. During this
meeting, they will discuss possible solutions, including dismissal
from the team.
Injury/Illness
Illnesses and doctor appointments related to an injury or current
illness are legitimate excuses for missing a practice or game.
If during the school day an athlete leaves school because of illness,
please leave a message in Coach Ackers school mailbox, text, send
an email, or call coach. If your daughter has an injury that requires
medical attention, she will need a doctors release to resume
practice or play. A physicians note must be turned into Coach Acker
or our athletic trainer in order for your daughter to resume practice
or play of any degree or level. Also note that if an athlete
misses any school the day of a game because of illness, she
cannot play in the game that day!

Pre-Game Procedures
A. For home games, sophomores & freshman should prepare for their
games as soon as school is out. JV players should be there for the tipoff of the sophomore game and varsity players should be there for the
tip-off of the JV game.
B. For away games, you will be excused fifteen minutes before the bus
departs. Bus times will be posted. The first bus will take sophomore
and freshman players, while the second bus will take varsity and JV

players.
C. We would like you to eat a meal at least three hours in advance of
the game, or four hours if possible, so the meal will have a chance to
digest. After eating, get off your feet until it is time to leave for the
game. We prefer you lie down and forget about the game for a while.
D. We want you to report to the dressing room in time to get your
necessary taping done and be dressed 45 minutes prior to game time.
Do not report to the dressing room too early. Get as much rest as
possible prior to coming to the game.
E. We want you to dress quietly. Sit on the floor and stretch when you
are dressed. We dont want any noise while you are preparing
mentally to go out for pre-game warm-ups. Use good judgment in
preparing yourself for the game.
F. We will review our overall game plan and answer any questions you
may have. Defensive assignments are repeated and briefly discussed.
Captains will be in charge of warm-ups. Use the warm-up time for
warming-up, not the first five minutes of the game. Captains will bring
the team back to the locker room with five minutes on the clock.
Game Policies
Follow instructions and be alert. You should respect everyone, but fear
no one. You should be confident in your abilities because of your
preparation, not cocky. We should never celebrate a play in a manner
that would be demeaning to our opponent (trash talking). We need
to stay focused and get ready for the next play. Players that
worry too much about their last mistake generally make
another one.

Bench Conduct
We want a lively and loyal bench. Stand when a substitute comes off
the court. Players on the bench should cheer (standing momentarily to

cheer is legal), encourage, warn and advise their playing teammates

on to a win. They should study the game and pay particular attention
to the player they are most likely to guard, the player who is most
likely to guard them, and all situations from which advance knowledge
may enable them to do a better job if, and when, they are called upon
to play. You are not spectators, but students of the game. Bench
players should never make any negative comments to opposing
players or officials.
Substitution (Hustle In! Hustle On! Hustle Off!)
A. It is best for a cold player to handle the ball once before taking a
shot from the floor. Make a place for the player coming out to sit next
to the coach so the coaches can explain what she did right, what she
did wrong and why she came out.
B. As soon as a coach tells you to go into the game, move quickly to
the scorers table. Wait for the official to motion you into the game.
The coach may stop you on your way to the scorers table or may talk
to you while youre waiting at the scorers table to give you specific
instructions. In the case of a speedy substitution (foul trouble, a dead
ball is about to become a live ball), instructions may be given on your
way into the game.
C. The replaced player should run to the bench and sit next to the
coach. Do not show any emotion. The manager will bring water and a
towel to you when you get to the bench.
Personal Fouls
Do not show emotion or gesture when you have been given a personal
foul. The referee will call a technical foul if any unsportsmanlike act is
shown. Do not change expression, stare at the official, or show any
emotion at all. Once again, players that worry too much about
their last mistake or an officials call often make another
mistake. We must maintain our FOCUS.

Half Time
A. Go directly from the floor to the locker room. Take care of any
lavatory needs as soon as you get to the locker room. The coaches will
talk briefly before addressing the team.
B. Managers should get the basketballs and water and hustle to the
locker room. Managers should give the players water to drink during
halftime. Managers should make sure the basketballs are in the locker
room so they can be taken back out for the players to warm-up at
halftime and so the basketballs dont disappear while the team is in the
locker room.
C. The halftime meeting will be brief and to the point. If you have any
questions or suggestions, know what you are going to say and make it
quick.
D. Returning to the floor from the locker room, the assistant coaches
should make sure that the starters have reported to the official scorer.
Coaches must also check the starting lineup of the opposing team and
make sure we are matched up properly.
Post Game
Following the game, go to the locker room without delay for a meeting.
No immature acts will be tolerated. If you have given your all, you
should not have any regrets.

Parent Partnership
Guidelines
1. A team members position will be determined by what is best
for the team.
2. If there are any problems that arise, we want to have proper
communication channels within the Basketball Program. The
following flowchart should be the standard for resolution of
issues:
a. Player to Team Coach
b. Player to Head Coach
c. Parent with Player to Head Coach (with Team Coach)
d. Parent with Player to Head Coach and Athletic Director
3. Schedule meetings with the coaching staff in advance, in
accordance with the list above through a documented email
request.
The door is always open and so is our mind, as long as it is the
right TIME, PLACE and TONE (if it involves playing time please
review the schools Athletics Communication Protocol
section before considering a meeting). Unless timing is very
critical, coaches suggest 24 hours after an incident before you
decide to address the issue with coaches via conversation, email
or any other means.
Email is a great tool for communication but not the best forum
to communicate serious matters where emotion is involved.
There is too much room for misunderstanding. Do not email
or text regarding playing time, strategy or other players.
We attempt to balance mercy and justice and keep short
accounts with the players when mistakes are made. We ask the
same of you. Please be open-minded as we work together to
resolve situations, which may arise.

Sometime parents want to protect their daughters from

disappointment and setbacks; the very things that make them
better. We will use these as teachable moments as we want our
players to understand struggles are likely to be a part of their
life.
We are coaching your daughters, not you as parents.
Your daughters need you as their biggest fans and we
as coaches need your support.

Coaches
Expectations
1. Basketball seasons starts the beginning of November. We
expect that you be in good physical condition in preparation for
the season.
2. Practice will be approximately two hours in length each day,
depending on what we need to work on. Try to leave all your
personal problems at home and we, as coaches, will try to do
the same. Come to practice willing and eager.
3. As you enter the locker room to dress, begin preparing yourself
mentally for practice as well as physically. Once you take the
court, your entire focus should be on working hard and making
us a better team.
4. We have a lot of hard work before we can become a really good
team. We are going to challenge you to be the best prepared
and conditioned team in the state. Lets be able to win close
games because of our poise, preparation and confidence.
5. When you step on the court begin shooting free throws. If
everyone has a partner begin shooting free throws on your own,
until the next player arrives. Never shoot with the same person
two days in a row. Get to know all your teammates and get
used to working hard with each one of them.

6. If you are unable to make it to practice, you need to leave a

message for Coach Acker on his cell phone (801-712-2511) or
try to reach one of the other members of the coaching staff on
their cell phones.
7. We cannot accomplish our goals if there is not a serious tone set
in practice. You deserve our best effort; therefore, expect
practices to be an intense learning experience. We will try to
conduct a FUN practice, without compromising this valuable
opportunity to learn and improve.

Additional
Information
Playing Time
Playing time is a privilege not a right. There are risks and rewards
to being on a team a great price is paid to be part of a team but
it may not result in playing time. One might argue that basketball
is the most difficult team sport to receive playing time. Not only
because of the limited number of players on the court, but
instances are rare that only one or two skills are required to be on
the court. Players instantly go from offense to defense and almost
always all five players have an active role in every single play.
We remind players be happy with what they have while pursuing
what they want.
Participation Fee

The pay to play fee will be handled directly by the office for each
player and is required by the Canyons School District.
Basketball Fee
A team practice uniform fee will be due by November 28 th, 2016
for practice uniforms and team apparel required for each player.
This fee can be taken care of through fundraising opportunities the
program will provide or independently. It can be made in
payments or in one lump sum. More details will be discussed at
our parent meeting in November.
Our main fundraisers have been banners, program brochure,
snack bar and special events. Any fresh new ideas are always
welcome.
All parents will be asked to volunteer and will fill out a work
schedule. This is necessary to man the snack bars during
tournament and home games all year. We want to avoid having
the same people volunteering over and over so that everyone gets
involved.

CONTRACT

on you. There will be times when you cannot do your own thing. The
