fromothercountriesthatcometotheU.S.mayhavenamesthatsoundfunnyoroddtousas
Americans.InAmerica,somepeoplegivetheirchildanamebecausetheythinkitisprettyorthe
childisnamedafteramemberinthefamily.Iknowthatinmyfamilymylittlecousinhastwo
middlenamesbecausetheyarefromhergrandmothersonbothsidesofherfamily.Inmy
immediatefamily,myfatherwasnamedafterhisfatherandIwasgiventhemiddlename
CharlesbecauseIwasagirl.Bothmyfatherandgrandfatherhavethesamemiddlenameandall
threeofushavethesameinitialsECL.
IaskedmyfamilywhytheygavememynameandIwassurprisedatwhattheytoldme.I
wasnamedafterErykahBaduandmyfather.IalreadyknewthatmyfathernamedmebutI
neveraskedwhyuntilnow.MydadsaidhegavemethenameErikahbecausehelovedthename
whichissomethingIdidnotknow.Onethinghedidgetwrongwasthespellingofmyname
whichIdidknow.Ilovetotellthispartofthestorybecauseitalwaysmakespeoplelaugh.Iwas
giventhemiddlenameCharlesbecausemydadwantedhimanditohavethesameinitials.My
momwantedmynametobeMorganbutmydadgottomakethefinaldecision.Iwasalsotold
thatiwasthelastchanceforaboyandthatisanotherreasonIhavethemiddlenameCharles.

Ilovemynamejustlikemydaddoes.Somedaysmynameisachallengebecausesome
peoplearenotablepronouncemyname.WhenIwasyounger,substituteteacherswould
mispronouncemynameoraskmehowtosayit.AtworkpeoplewouldsayIhaveaprettyname
ortheywouldalsomispronounceit.NamingachildisnoteasybutIamgladthatmyparents
gavemethenameErikahCharlesLawsonbecausethereisonlyoneme.
