Anunusualtechniqueasfarasvisualstorytellinggoes,thelockeddownshotkeepsthecameraonthesame
subjectevenwhensomethingnewstartshappeningoutofframewhatwouldusuallyhappenisacamera
movementoranewshottoincludethenewelementsoftheaction.Thiseffectcreatessuspenseinregardof
whatthespectatorknowsishappeningbutcannotactuallyseeyet.

Thebirdseyeshotlooksatascenefromdirectlyaboveit.Itisnottobeconfusedwiththeaerialshot,whichis
moreangledandrequiresmoremovementfromthecamerastill,boththeaerialshotandthebirdseyecanbe
usedasestablishingshots.Thebirdseyeisalsoagoodtechniquetoisolateacharacterormakehimorherlook
smallerorisolated.

circle.Itwasveryfrequentlyusedinsilentfilms,andmoviesfromthateraareoftenidentifiedorparodiedthrough
thistechnique.Anadditionaladvantagefromusinganirisshotisthechancetoconcentratetheviewersattention
onaparticularelementofthescenebymakingthecircleopenorclosearoundit.

14.TrackingShot
Atrackingshotfollowsthesubjectofasceneforanextendedtimethetermreferstoboththesmoothertracking
shotsmadewithadollyandthelessregularsequenceswhichuseasteadycamorevenhandheldcameras(like
inthetrackingshotofAlfonsoCuaronsChildrenofMen).
Themaineffectofthistechniqueistoputapersonoranobjectatthecenterofadynamicmoment:itcanbe
describedasstayingonanelementandatthesametimeshowingachangingenvironmentaroundit.Itisnotto
beconfusedwithlongtakes.

Alongtakeisaprolongedshotofasinglesceneandhasnocutsifalongtakecoversawholesequence,itis
calledasequenceshot.Longtakesandsequenceshotsareamongthemosttalkedabouttechniquesincinema
sincetheyalwaysrequireanimpressivetechnicalabilitybutalsohaveanalmostbreathtakingeffectonthe
viewer.
Whenemployinglongtakes,directorsoftenaddmanycameramovementsorcoveralengthyspacetounderline
orenhancetheshotseffect.
