Aim: To study the Q factor for series resonance circuit.

Apparatus: Spectrum analyzer, frequency generator (860 MHz), connecting wires, RCL
filter network kit.
Circuit Diagram:

Theory: Q (quality factor) describe the selectivity of the filter. It defines the ratio of
average stored energy loss per cycle at resonant frequency.
Q = w. average stored energy
energy loss per cycle at w=wc
= w. average stored energy
power loss
at w=wc
= w. w stored
Ploss
at w=wc
Where the power loss Ploss equals the energy loss per unit time. In applying
this definition care must be taken to distinguish between loaded and unloaded
filter.
It is customary to consider the power loss as consisting of the power
lossassociated with the external load and filter itself.
The resulting Q is loaded Q (Qw)
1/qLD=(1/qf)+(1/qe)
Where QF and QE are filter Q and external Q.
For series resonant circuit,
QE= w.L/RE =1/(RE W C)
RE=external resistors.
QF=w.L/R= 1/RwC.
QLD= w.l/(R+RE)= 1/(R+RE).w.C
Also, QLD can be found by the formula
Qld=fc/(fu3db-fl3db) =fc/bw3db

Here fc=1/2*3.14*(LC)1/2
Procedure:
1. Connect the given circuit as shown in figure.
2. Connect at the input a 110 dB V RF source having frequency range 30 MHz to 860
MHz.
3. Give the output across RL to a spectrum analyzer to measure power in dBm.
4. Change the values of the input frequency and obtain the output power in each case.
5. Plot the graph of output power versus frequency to obtain a band pass response.
Observation table:
