Simplifying Complex Rational Expressions

This document provides instructions and examples for simplifying complex rational expressions, which are fractions that contain fractions in either the numerator or denominator. There are two methods for simplifying complex fractions: 1) treat the numerator and denominator as separate problems and combine the fractions, then perform the division; and 2) simplify each expression by combining fractions according to the given rules. Eight practice problems are provided for students to simplify complex rational expressions.

7.5 Complex Rational Expressions

NAME:_________________________

When we have a fraction that contains fractions in either of the numerator or the denominator, we call it a
complex fraction. We have all the tools now to simplify these objects. There are two methods that we can
use to simplify these. I will present one of them. You are welcome to read about the other one and choose
which one you prefer.
To simplify a complex fraction:
1.) Treat the numerator and denominator as two separate problems. Combine the fractions in the
numerator and then combine the fractions in the denominator.
2.) Then perform the division indicated by the main fraction bar.
3.) Simplify
