Oleksiak breaks Olympic record, makes history

winning 100m free gold in Rio

Sprinting the 100 metre freestyle to take Olympic gold, Penny Oleksiak
entered historic territory winning her second individual and fourth
overall medal at Rio 2016 on Thursday night.
The 16-year-old from Toronto had shattered her own national and junior
world record a day earlier in this event, swimming the 100m free in
52.72 seconds, taking 0.59s off the old mark.

Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia wins first track gold medal at

Rio 2016 and shatters 10,000m world record

Ethiopian runner Almaz Ayana delivered a stunning start to track and

field at the Olympics with a world record in the 10,000m on Friday (12
August), wiping away the competition just after the halfway point and
striding to victory with effortless grace. After crossing the finish line, she
raised her hands in triumph and came to a stop, fully realizing what she
had done: Her time of 29 minutes, 17.45, had shaved 14.33 seconds off
the 1993 mark of China's Wang Junxia.

An Interview with Toronto rapper/producer, Rasselas

By Teshome Woldeamanuel

and downs were faced with coming to

this country. I write about the culture
shock, the mixing of African culture
with American culture. I also write to
motivate the youth to have courage to
go for what they want in life. Sometimes I lighten up my message to just
make a song that people can party to
because it is important to have fun at
the same time as we are moving forward in overcoming our challenges in
life.

Rasselas Asfaw

Teshome:Where did you grow up? How long

have you been doing what youre doing
and how did you get started in the first
place?
Rasselas:1. I was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I moved to Canada with
my family in my early teenage years. I
always had the love for music because
I grew up I musical family. While me
and my sisters were growing up, my
parents played all types of music in our
house. At age 12, I decided that I will
make music professionally and started
writing my own songs. Upon moving
to Canada, I found an opportunity to
join a studio crew and learned how to
produce music. Today, I own my own
record label, Injera Music, and my own
studio through which I produce and release my own records.
Teshome:What is your musical background?
Who were the first influences on your
music and style?
Rasselas:2. As a young child, I used to listen to
a wide variety of music from traditional Ethiopian music to Motown R&B
to rock & roll. I liked Michael Jackson, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Tilahoun Gessesse, Mahmoud Ahmed just
to name a few. I was also inspired by
hip-hop artists with the likes of Rakim,
Krs-One, Mc Hammer, Kris Kross,
Snoop Dogg and 2pac.
Teshome:Why do you want to record and release
your own music? Who is your
fan/customer?
Rasselas:Music is my way of giving to the
world. I hope to inspire, teach, entertain and amuse through my music. I tell
my story through my music and hopefully it will help others overcome their
challenges in life and live better.
Teshome:What are your songs about? Do you
write your own songs? Who are your
musical influences?
Rasselas:My songs tell my story, the story of a
young man who came from East Africa
to North America looking for opportunity and a better life. I tell it as it is, the
good-times and the bad-times, the ups

Teshome:How do you describe your music to

people? How do you separate yourself
from other artists?
Rasselas:There are only a few artists that have
every taken the artistic path that I have
chosen. Most of the time I am walking where there are no footprints. I
am making my own path and my own
niche in the music industry. I am always into doing new kinds of tracks
that nobody has ever tried. I have done
this while mixing Ethiopian and African music with hip-hop. I will always
stand for originality and creativity in
whatever I do.
Teshome:Please inform us about your favorite
songs and lyrical highlights and why?
Rasselas:Description of some of the songs for
my latest album Hagger Swagger:
Nebsu: Nebsu means Homie in
Amharic. As immigrant youth coming
to America or Canada looking for a
better life, we are subjected to different
challenges that are usually overlooked.
Moving to a different country to change
our lives exposes us to culture-shock
because of the difference in the way
of living. Our expectations in our new
home-land might not be fulfilled as
we try to keep the same lifestyle that
we had in our old home-land but at
the same time try to live like people
we meet in our new home-land. In the
end, were all trying to be successful,
but sometimes, poverty, trauma, culture-shock, being mis-understood and
the feeling of loneliness can lead us to
the wrong path to attempt to reach the
success that we desire. Having faced
these challenges first hand compelled
me to tell the story of Nebsu, the
immigrant kid that is trying to be successful in America. What they tell you
before you came to America/ And what
you found? That theres money on the
ground, Nebsu?
Guragigna: This song is inspired by
the Gurage rhythm from Ethiopia.
Gurage is a tribe in Ethiopia. Gurage
people are known to be hard-working and fun-loving people that love to
dance. They are very good with money
and business management and are very
much respected for it in the country.
The Gurage rhythm always gets the
party going and is easy to dance to. It
has structural similarities to old-school
hip-hop, which is why it is also easy
to rap to. In this song, I am encouraging people to be free and join us in
dancing and moving. At the same time,

I encourage people to apply the same

mind-state of freedom in their lives:
So free your mind, whats holding
you back/ From doin what you want
and gettin what you want/
Welcome to My World: In this song, I
wanted to let people know who I am
and what my story is. I came a long
way from growing up in the streets
of Addis Abeba to where I am today,
a successful Hip-Hop musician, living and doing what I really believe in.
I want to inspire the youth in everything I do and let them know that their
dreams are possible regardless of what
other people tell them.
Welcome to my world, have I told you
its mine?/
God be my partner in crime, part of the
grind/
Im planting seeds like its gardening
time, takes a lot of my time/
My blood-type gettin harder to find/
The type that will never resign, that is
not how Im designed/
Cuz true leaders never falling behind/
You can sure call it divine, I follow the
signs/
In time the glory and shine supposed
to be mine/
Cuz theres a few things that will never
combine/
Progress and the ones that are scared
of trying/
Its like they never seek what theyre
trina find/
Opposites to each other like parallel
lines/
The dumb telling the deaf, the blind
leading the blind/
These are the times, thank you for being so kind/
Trina tell me how to get mines, youre
earnin not even a dime/
Everybody loves speakin their mind/
On repeat and rewind, but to follow
Im not even inclined/
No thank you cuz Id rather decline/
9 - 5 is the box where Im not confined/
Dont be messin with the state of my
mind as I get on my grind/
Who Am I: When I produced this song,
I was going to a realization that everything that I do is an attempt to find out
who I really am. After challenging myself to accomplish something, I would
be able to tell my capacity. And that
capacity almost always turns out to be
surprisingly more than I expected. We
all have power inside of us that we need
to tap into ASAP. We are not created to
live a mediocre life of no fulfillment,
just physical action. We are made for
a higher purpose and the quicker we
wake up the faster we can start living
a meaningful life. Been so busy trina
fit in that box they built for me/ That I
forgot my one and only true identity/
This song includes the Massinko instrument sound from Ethiopia, played
by Massinko legend Endres Hassen
Ahmed.
What I do in my music is mix the
Ethiopian traditional music with my
Hip-Hop influences. I could do this in
different ways. Sometimes, I sample a
traditional song that I like (Track 8 Hagger Swagger, Track 9 - Ere Endet

New) and build around the sample a

composition that compliments it and
makes it sound more funky or rocking,
or powerful!
Sometimes, I use original instrumentation (Track 1- Who am I) and compose
a complete beat to write a complete
song to.
Sometimes, I simply make a beat that
sounds good but has the influences that
I want to demonstrate (Track 14 - Hoy
Muna - Traditional Gonder influenced
original beat, Track 7 Guragigna - Traditional Gurage influenced original
beat, Track 4 - Nebsu - Hip-Hop Trap
beat)
I feel the need to tell my story first. My
life and the lessons that I have learned
would be a valuable lesson for the
youth who are struggling with some of
the problems that Ive had as an immigrant kid from Ethiopia. I grew up half
my life in Ethiopia and the rest in Canada so I am familiar with the challenges in both places and address the issues
concerning the youth. I also lighten up
my message purposely and make songs
about fun and party because it is important that we enjoy our lives regardless of the challenges we face daily. As
long as we are moving forward in solving our problems, it is OK to have fun
and enjoy the moment sometimes.
I was raised listening to a variety of
music from all over the world, from every continent. Mostly Ethiopian traditional music and American music from
different eras. There is a lot of names
to name as inspirations to my musical
influence but the following are some of
the most prominent:
Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Stevie
Wonder, Lionel Richie, Tilahoun Gesesse, Aster Aweke, Mahmoud Ahmed,
Alemayehu Eshete, Snoop Dogg and
Dr. Dre, Rakim, Wyclef Jean, Bone
Thugs-n-Harmony, Bob Marley
Teshome:Explain the meaning behind Hagger
Swagger - the words, and the album
in its entirety
Rasselas:Hagger means Country in Amharic, Swagger means Style. Hagger
Swagger means I am delivering HipHop in my country style. I am bringing
my county influences to the Hip-Hop
world, and the whole world.
Through this album, I am telling my
story and the life that I have lived so
far in East-Africa and North America.
I am pretty sure many people can relate to my story and hopefully they will
benefit from listening to my album either by finding a solution to their problems, gaining hope for the future or just
entertaining themselves by rocking to
some cool rhythms and rough rhymes.
I used to be ashamed of my past, but I
am no more. I am willing to share everything I have for the good of whoever will benefit from my music.
Please visit www.RasselasMusic.com
for new releases and updates.
Thank you.

Patriotic Ginbot 7 for Unity and
Democracy (PG7) and the Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) announced that they have formed an
alliance. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Prof.
Berhanu Nega and Leenco Lataa
representing their respective organizations.
Following is the full text of the
MoU. Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) and Patriotic Ginbot
7 (PG7)
August 11, 2016
After several candid discussions
and careful considerations of the
current political, social, economic

and humanitarian situations in Ethiopia, and all the damages caused by

successive regimes and the TPLF/
EPRDF regime in particular on the
welfare and national interests of the
peoples of Ethiopia and the security
and sovereignty of our country, the
ODF and PG7 have made important
observations and conclusions. The
longer the current regime is allowed
to stay in power, the harsher will be
the pain, suffering and humiliation
endured by the peoples of Ethiopia.
Therefore, both parties are fully
convinced that a transition from the
current TPLF regime towards a new
and genuinely federal and democratic state is of utmost urgency.

Both organizations take note of the

fact that millions of people in Oromia for the last nine months, and
now in the Amhara regions, as well
as in the south, coming out and protesting in massive show of defiance,
just a few months after the regime
claimed a 100 percent victory in the
sham elections it conducted in May
2015, and the manner of its reaction
to the legitimate popular protests,
demonstrate beyond doubt that
the regime has lost any semblance
of legitimacy. We believe that the
mass killings, brutality, and inhuman treatment perpetrated by the
TPLF regime against the peaceful
protesters are enough indications
that the Woyyane clique is determined to control all spheres of life
in Ethiopia by sheer use of force
and cling to power at all costs. The
regimes unwillingness to function
in a multi-party political environment, provided for in its own tailor
made constitution, and unabated
repression and brutal killings in all
parts of Ethiopia, harassment and
persecution of the legal opposition,
civil society and journalists, as well
as gross abuse of power, looting of
public and state resources demonstrate that the regime has closed
all political space and avenues for
reform. Therefore, ODF and PG7
firmly believe that the people have
no other choice to end this tyranny
and humiliation, but to engage in
a concerted and coordinated mass

Ethiopian Forces Kill Up to 100 Protesters

Governments Should Press Ethiopia to Allow an International Investigation

Felix Horne

Researcher, Horn of Africa @felixhorne1

As anti-government protests spread

across Ethiopias Amhara and Oromia regions last weekend, state security forces once again used lethal
force to break them up killing as
many as 100 unarmed protesters.
More than 500 demonstrators are
now estimated to have been killed
by security forces in largely peaceful protests since November 2015.
Demonstrators
are
protesting
against alleged abuses and discrimination by the government.
The authorities have detained thousands during the demonstrations,
and charged opposition political
leaders with terrorism. The governments heavy-handed response
is likely to fuel growing anger and
frustration.

in the Oromia and Amhara regions
before deciding how to act. In its
oral report to parliament in June,
however, the commission concluded that the level of force used by security forces in Oromia was proportionate to the risk they faced from
protesters.

On Wednesday, the United Nations

top human rights official stressed
the need for an international investigation into the killings. Ethiopias
government immediately rejected
this, stating to Al Jazeera that it

Who may benefit from acupuncture treatment?

Acupuncture is also starting to make inroads into veterinary medicine. This article explains how a mare which had an infection in her ankle was treated by a vet
at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of
Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech with
a combination of acupuncture and traditional therapy.
As more and more physicians accept acupuncture, a wider range of illnesses and
condition are being considered for acupuncture treatment. A study found that
acupuncture may help indigestion symptoms commonly experienced by pregnant
women.

As it is very difficult to devise clinical

studies that measure the effectiveness of
acupuncture against a placebo, it is hard
to create a definitive list of conditions in
which acupuncture may be effective. However, some studies have indicated that acupuncture may help in treating low back
pain (according to the SPINE trial), fibromyalgia (Mayo Clinic trials), migraines,
post-operative dental pain (the Cochrane
review), hypertension (Center for Integrative Medicine at UC Irvine study) and
osteoarthritis (according to researchers at
the University Medical Center in Berlin,
Germany), as well as chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Other studies
have shown that acupuncture may help
women with painful periods. A Cochrane

trial found that although acupuncture helps

people with headaches, fake acupuncture
also seems to help them.
Exercise and electro-acupuncture treatments can reduce sympathetic nerve activ-

ity in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome, a study found.

Is Ethiopia about to crack?
For the past decade, it has been one
Africas most stable nations, a solid Western ally with a fast-growing
economy. But in recent months,
antigovernment protests have convulsed the country, spreading into
more and more areas. In the past
week alone, thousands of people
stormed into the streets, demanding
fundamental political change.

But that may be changing.

If you suffocate people, and they
dont have any other options but to
protest, it breaks out, said Seyoum
Teshome, a university lecturer in
central Ethiopia. The whole youth
is protesting. A generation is protesting.
The complaints are many, covering everything from land use to the
governing coalitions stranglehold
on power. After a widely criticized
election last year, the governing
party and its allies got the last seat
the opposition had held and now
control 100 percent of the Parliament. At the same time, tensions are
rising along the border with Eritrea;
a battle along that jagged, disputed
line claimed hundreds of lives in
June.

The government response, according to human rights groups, was

ruthless. Witnesses said that police officers shot and killed scores
of unarmed demonstrators. Videos
circulating from protests thought to
be from late last year or earlier this
year show security officers whipping young people with sticks as
they were forced to perform handstands against a wall. The top U.N. Analysts fear that separatist groups

How the Ethiopia protests were

stifled by a coordinated internet
shutdown By Quartz August 16, 2016

Nearly 100 deaths and thousands

of arrests have been reported inEthiopia over the week, as part
of protests against the marginalization and persecution of the
Oromos and Amharas, Ethiopias
two largest ethnic groups. But the
attacks and arrests may not have
been the only forms of retribution
carried out by the Ethiopian government in its crackdown against
protesters.
Last weekend, the internet was reportedly shut down in the country.

More protests sprung up in the

Amhara regional state, with protesters requesting political reforms and specifically, the Welkait
community demanding that ancestral land currently administered by
the Tigray regional state be moved
into the neighboring Amhara region.
The new-found unity between the
two historically antagonistic communities of the Oromo and Amharas against a common adversary, the TPLF-led government,
seems to have raised the tension
in the country. The security forces response has been extreme,
with observers comparing it to the
2005 post-election violence where
nearly 200 people were killed.
This time though, at least 30 people were reportedly killed in the
Amhara region in one day alone.

In an attempt to understand whether the internet was in fact shut

down, we looked at some public
sources of data that contain information about internet traffic. Such
data provides strong indicators
that the internet was most likely shut down during the Ethiopianprotests last weekend, though it Internet shutdown

Back in Britain, Andy became general

secretary of an opposition coalition and
one of Ethiopias top pro-democracy activists. He testified to the US Congress
about the dire state of human rights in
Ethiopia under the EPRDF, and was a
regular commentator on Ethiopian affairs
for the BBC.
In 2009, Ethiopian security forces again
moved to crush dissent, arresting dozens
of people who had spoken out against the
government. Andy was charged in absentia and sentenced to death, in a trial
that observing US diplomats described
as lacking in basic elements of due process. Ethiopias then prime minister,
Meles Zenawi, who oversaw my partners death sentence, was an old university friend Andy had once hosted in London.
Andy continued to call for democracy in
Ethiopia, criticising the regimes human
rights abuses and the suffocation of free
speech. This authoritarian tendency escalated ahead of the most recent elections,
where the EPRDF won 100% of the parliamentary seats.
Independent bloggers were rounded
up and given lengthy sentences. Andy
wasnt safe either, even though hes a
British passport holder who had avoided
stepping foot in Ethiopia for nearly a decade. In 2014, a few weeks before Andy,
the kids and I were due to go to Rome on
holiday, he was kidnapped by the Ethiopian authorities miles outside their border.
He was passing through an international
airport in Yemen en route to meet exiled
Ethiopian opposition politicians when
he was snatched and taken forcibly to
Ethiopia. He has been held there by the
countrys security forces ever since, under sentence of death.
Weeks after Andy disappeared, British diplomats found out and told me
what had happened. It broke my heart.
I screamed and I wept, knowing Andy
was now a captive in Ethiopia. He was
in the lions den. There is no place more
dangerous for him in the world. Here in
London, I look at our three children and

it just breaks my heart. I am really trying

my hardest to stay positive, but I can tell
that they see through this. It is especially
hard on them. Our two twins turned nine
without their father here, and our eldest
daughter, Holly, has turned 16, taken her
exams, and started college without him
here. Sometimes the children cry and talk
about their fears that their papa may not
come home.
I am not allowed to visit Andy. While he
was initially held in a secret location for
a year, he is now detained in a prison outside the capital called Kality, which holds
journalists and political activists and has
been dubbed Ethiopias gulag. This
nightmare has been going on for over
two years. Our three children desperately
want their dad back.
I can only imagine that the EPRDF is
going to these extreme lengths because
they know that Andy is one of the most
important people in the Ethiopian opposition, and therefore represents a threat
to them. Andy wants to see fairness, democracy and choice which we take for
granted in the US and the UK offered to
a nation that has spent decades under the
oppression of dictatorial regimes.
So far the British government has refused
to call for Andys release a call that has
been made by the UN, members of US
Congress, the European parliament, and
British MPs. The Foreign Office says its
trying to get Andy a lawyer, but its plain
that there are no fair trials for political activists in Ethiopia just yesterday there
were fears for 20 students from Addis
Ababa who went on trial for protesting

Addis Ababa - Ethopia has dismissed a plea from the United Nations that it allow international observers to investigate the killing of
protesters by security forces during

Ethiopias Failure to Communicate:

looking bad.

Strathink offers here 5 steps the government

should immediately take to try and explain
itself to the outside world.
Decide on your core messages.
The Communications Minister may be the
face of the Ethiopian government to the external media, but behind Mr. Getachew are a
number of political institutions directly engaged in mitigating the unrestor the cause
of the unrest. The Prime Minister an his cabinet need to decide how the government can
best articulate the grievances of its citizens as
well as the governments response. This is not
just media-driven. Civil society is a consumer
of media. The government should develop an
honest and transparent narrative that reflects
the grievances of the people as well as how
the government hopes to resolve these grievances. It should not be an angry and dismissive rebuttal but a clear articulation of the
problem and possible solutions. Build consensus on the messaging and stick to it.

Taking the high road is a much better strategy

even in the midst of misinformation, disinformation, lies, rumor and innuendo. The government needs to communicate all the known
information about the crisis to its audiences
in an appropriate manner. Audiences need frequent and regular updates about the process
of recovery from a particular event and any
corrective measures taken by the government
to address grievances. Last, there should be a
constant learning process about what works
and doesnt work in communicating with the
various audiences.
Mr. Getachew, we certainly sympathize with
your situation. It is not an easy position to fill
and lesser people would have quit by now.
However, more backing from the government
in terms of developing the right messages for
the right audiences, more engagement with
the press, and using the right communication
tools will make your job a little easier.
