Surface area and rate of reaction

Directions:
1. Within your group, plan an investigation that tests the effect of surface area on the
rate of reaction using materials within the lab
2. Draw a diagram of how you intend you proceed and construct a list of the data that
you will collect

Data to collect:

3. Before you conduct your investigation, assess the risks associated with your
investigation. If using chemicals, refer to the MSDS data sheets (ask the teacher for
these!)
4. Construct a risk assessment that assesses the risks and precautions you need to take
to minimize risks
5. Show your teacher the procedure and risk assessment. If your teacher approves,
then you can conduct your experiment

Hints: To design your experiment, consider the following.

How will you measure the rate of reaction?

What one variable will you change?
What factors will you control?
