Dear Parents or Guardians, Over the past several years, the school district community has had many discussions regarding classroom celebrations, student wellness and safely, and creating a welcoming environment for all students. We have discussed many aspects of our district practices in this light, including how we recognize our students on their birthdays. Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, we will implement a practice of students not bringing birthday treats, including food and non-food items, This decision was made after much thought and discussion at a district level, as a community, and asa staff. There are a variety of reasons why this change has been made, including: © The impact upon limited instructional time © The impact of the number of ‘treat days’ on the cleanliness level of instructional spaces ¢ Financial impact for families, and concern for children and families who may not be able to afford the same expenses other families might ‘® The concern for students with allergies or other dietary needs ‘© The number of high-calorie, low-nutrient treats distributed to children over the school year ‘The desire to focus attention on the child as opposed to the treat This practice of refraining from distributing treats also complements our healthy snack practice. Families that wish to remember their child's birthday by a contribution to classroom resources such as books, decorations, or similar items should contact the building principal in advance to discuss the proposed donation, For many families this practice is not new as a number of our teachers have already initiated the ‘no birthday treat practice in their classrooms. For others this will be your family’s first encounter with this practice, We realize that this change may not be desired news for everyone at this time. Please be assured that parental support has been more than favorable from the schools and classrooms that have already moved in this direction. Classroom teachers will continue to realize how important sense of self is to a child and to recognize children on their special day in special ways. Thanks in advance for your support of this Practice and for helping promote healthy snacks in the Forest Lake Area Schools.
