WHO WAS THE RULER OF ENGLAND

DURING SHAKESPEARE'S TIME?

The two monarchs who ruled England

during the time of William Shakespeare
were Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.

King James ascended to the throne in 1603,

13 years before Shakespeare's death.

Queen Elizabeth allowed the construction of

England's first professional theaters during
her reign.

Shakespeare's
theater
company, once known as
Lord Chamberlain's Men,
acquired the patronage of
King James when he
became
the
reigning
monarch and changed its name to the King's
Men.
ELIZABETH AND JAMES I

Shakespeare lived during a remarkable

period of English history.
During her 45-year reign, London became a
cultural and commercial center where
learning and literature thrived.

Queen Elizabeth was fond of the theater,

and many of England's greatest
playwrights were active during her reign,
including Christopher Marlowe, Ben
Jonson, and William Shakespeare.
The Shakespearean sonnet, Spenserian
stanza, and dramatic blank verse also came
into practice during the period.

With the permission

of Queen Elizabeth,
professional theaters
were built in England
for the first time,
attracting
15,000
theatergoers
per
week in London.

Elizabeth

She was a tremendous fan of theater

and the literary arts; she
was
even
an
accomplished poet.
In turn, Shakespeare
faithfully supported the
queen and referred to
her in several of his
works, including "A
Midsummer Night's Dream".

HOW WAS SHAKESPEARE

INFLUENCED BY QUEEN
ELIZABETH?

Queen

Her insistence that women were

emotionally and intellectually equal to
men influenced his portrayal of women
characters as three-dimensional human
beings, a first in literature and theater at
that time.

Shakespeare's chief patrons and served as

a staunch defender of his plays when
critics attempted to have them banned

William

"Macbeth" as a

James I.

"Macbeth" relates the story of someone who

overthrows the King of Scotland by killing
him.

The witches in Shakespeares tragedy

coincide with James' enthusiasm with the
subject of witches.
"Macbeth" is the only Shakespearean play

that is set in Scotland.

from 1564-1616.
