7 Things you need to ask for when you negotiate a new job.
If you still change your job, it could be better to assure yourself to come out on the right side.
1. Ask for money
The best opportunity to obtain an increase of your earnings you have when you negotiate the
salary for your new job. You`ll have discussions also during the job, but a more favorable
context then the one you have on the beginning is less probable to find.
So, put aside timidity and, without being actually malapert, propose different sums and insist
on them. If you got people to want you on their boat very much, now is the moment to pick
up the fruitage of these efforts.
2. Ask for more days of paid holiday
According to the law, you have the right of a minimal number of 20 days of paid holiday per
year. But that number should not be looked at as a limit, but more likely as a start point. The
free days help you to keep a balance between professional life and personal life, they give
you the occasion to relax, to travel, to spend time with the ones you love or simply to draw
out yourself from the stress and the throng of daily work.
3. Ask for unpaid holiday
If you are one of the people that can`t break free from work, e-mails, projects, work activities,
if you are one of the people who terrorize others with meetings at 6 p.m. , then it may seem
strange to negotiate free time. That`s ok, let the others ask for free time, the ones who know
how to appreciate it. Work is like a gas who occupies all the space. Sooner or later everyone
feels the need to put some limits, and to ask for unpaid holiday every year will give you the
possibility to disconnect, if you`ll want. You assure yourself an option that you may need.
4. Ask for budget for you professional development
Your earning is given by the importance of the work that is given to you. If you aren`t
concerned in becoming better all the time, sooner or later your earning will be affected. More
than that, your professional satisfaction and self-respect as a whole may be affected. So
assure yourself a budget that you will use in your personal development aim. Your employer
will make good use of this budget too, because you will fructify the intensified productivity at
your job: and you can tell them this in the discussions.
5. Do not enthuse about the sonority of titles or about desk`s size
You will be part of a professional team. We are number 1, we offer you remarkable
opportunities. Very few people of your generation have already reached this position. You`ll
have your own desk, including a separated table for discussions, with leather chairs. That`s

very well. Can you pay installments with the title of the business card? No. Ask for money.
Does the individual desk help you with something on your professional development or it
assures a balance between work and personal life? Improbable. Ask for holyday or a flexible
program. Titles are good, but they doesn`t change the reality: you`ll work a lot. Many people
will want all sorts of things from you. They will stress and challenge you up to the chin. So
be sure that the things you obtain in exchange have true value for you.
6. Ask for things that can be measured
I would want freedom in taking decisions, possibilities of professional development, and a
boss who would be open at my ideas. Of course, with pleasure.
Every year: 15 days of paid holiday, and in addition to what corresponds legally, at the most
15 free unpaid days and a budget of 1500 euro for different classes chosen together, in
addition of the salary in value of x sounds much better, in my opinion.
7. Little advices
If you start by asking for a longer paid holiday, you could be cut short with an it can`t be.
Therefore, start with money. When the discussion about money arrives at the point when you
are asking for more, but the employer can`t offer you more, then that is the moment when
you say that you are ready to accept a longer paid holiday instead of the money that they
can`t pay you.
If the package includes a car, avoid asking for a bigger one. The car is tempting, especially
for men. You look at the mark, at the model, at the motorization and you smile with content.
But you get used with it. If a car on a lower level offers you what you need, insist on a
supplementary quantity from points 1-4.
If you will have to travel a lot till the office and back every day, not because you live far , but
because the firm moved far, it is a good pretext to ask for something more. An example
would be a week of holiday per year.
Analyse if you could use what the employer is offering: gym pass, medical services, etc. If
that service seems valuable to you, then accept it. If it is just nice to have, change it now with
something more important to you.
Insist. Do not rush. Be polite, but determined. Underline all the time what you offer them.
And after you agree, assure yourself that you bring much more than you have promised.
