The term
describes an attempt to recall the name of something, and giving
the general sense of it, but very much missing the mark. It can be
due to laziness, or a genuine attempt to remember the name, but is
only ever in the same ballpark, never on target.
It was coined after my father, the late Ger McGlynn, was trying to
remember the name of a ride in Disneyland. It was called Big
Thunder Mountain Railroad, a cowboy/western-themed rollercoaster.
He called it the Gulch Express, in a somewhat lame effort to
remember its actual name. Ever since, similar linguistic vagaries
have been called gulches.
