Cooling system

The purpose of the cooling system is to keep the engine at its most efficient operating
tempterature in all driving conditions. Some of the heat reached by the burning gases is
absorbed by the cylinders and pistons. They, in turn, must be provided with some of cooling
since higher temperatures cause in the lubrificating-oil film to break down and lose its
lubrificating properties.Air-cooled engines have metal fins on the heads of cylinders to help
dissipate heat.Cylinders are separate and special shrouds and blowers are used to improuve air
circulation around the cylinders and heads.
The liquid-cooling systems usually employ a water pomp driven by a belt from the crankshaft, which circulates the liquid between the radiator and the water jackets.
