choice of Rio marked the first time that the country has
been designated to host the Olympic Games. Furthermore,
it
is the first time that an Olympic event will be held in
a Portuguese-speaking country , the first to be held
in a South American country , the second in a Latin
American country was Mexico -the first edition
1968 , the third time that will occur in the southern
hemisphere were -previously Melbourne and
Sydney 2000- 1956 and the seventh in a country on
the continent America were -previously San Luis 1904
, Los
Angeles 1932 , Mexico 1968 , Montreal 1976 , Los
Angeles 1984 and Atlanta 1996 .

The city of Rio de Janeiro was chosen unanimously by the Brazilian

Olympic Committee as the national candidate city for the Olympics XXXI
September 1, 2006 , beginning a process of ten years until the Olympic
Games. The celebration of the 2007 Pan American Games tested
organizational capabilities of the COB and the city , sortendolas
successfully and giving a new impetus to the candidacy by obtaining the
first Olympics for South America.
