The table above demonstrates how the absorbance for each test tube increased after adding a
specific amount of NaSCN.
SCN- initial concentration:
=(
M 1 V 1=M 2 V 2
Kc = [FeSCN2+]eq / [Fe3+]eq[SCN-]eq
= (1.44x10-4) / (8.56x10-4) (3.56x10-4) = 4.73x102
The table above shows all the initial concentrations for each compound, and the equilibrium
concentration that was reached.
Discussion
1- Even though different amounts of NaSCN was added, the Kc relatively was similar
because when the NaSCN was added to the system, it shifted to the left, causing the
concentration of SNC to increase, however, as shown, the concentration of Fe kept
decreasing, which caused the balance of the Kc value.
2- The average KC value is 4.43 x102. We can use this value of KC to calculate the
equilibrium concentration of FeSCN2+ in the mixture of 4mL of 2.0 x10-3M of Fe(NO3)3
and 3.00mL of 5.00 x10-3M NaSCN and diluting it with water to a total of 10mL.
