WINCH

A winch is a mechanical device that is used to pull in (wind

up) or let out (wind out) or otherwise adjust the tension of
a rope or wire rope (also called cable or wire cable). In
its simplest from it consists of a spool and attached hand
crank . In larger forms, winches stand at the heart of
machines as diverse as tow trucks, steam sholves and
elevators. The spool can be called the winch drum.

Winches with various arrangements of barrels are the usual

mooring equipment used on board ship. The winch barrel
or drum is used for hauling in or letting out the wires or
ropes which will fasten the ship to the shore. The wrap
end is used when moving the ship using ropes or wires
fastened to bollards ashore and wrapped around the wrap
end of the winch.
