Attempted history of Romanian cinema

Beginning
If I am to approach the presentation of Romanian cinema in the same manner/vein
as Top Gear has done their show in Romania I should start as follows:
No interest in producing films ... and all that existed have been tinted with
political interventions.
May 1896 first moving pictures produced in Romania.

The first movie that historically speaking matters in the Romanian cinema is The
Independence of Romania 1912 directed by G. Brezeanu and A. Demetriade.
Given its duration, budget, and number of actors this film is indeed the worlds
first propaganda film and not The Birth of the Nation of D.W. Griffith.

Communist era
Obviously, not the propaganda movies are of main interest here but those who can
be circumscribed by having the l'air du dissidence.

The Old Wave

The films produced and /or screened in 90s by directors such as Lucian Pintilie, Nae Caranfil, Tudor
Giurgiu, S. Purcarete, Titus Muntean, Mircea Danieliuc.
The defining phrase describing the films of this period has been given by C. Mungiu:
"It was a time when, you know, saying something about the system was more important than telling
a story."

The New Wave

While one can think of a time marking the end of the first/old wave this so called New Wave is still
happening.
Main directors whose productions make up this cinematic current Radu Jude, Cristian Mungiu, C.
Porumboiu, N. Toader, C.P. Netzer, C. Puiu although some of the directors can be easily included
in both lists: T Giurgiu, T Muntean, R. Muntean, M. Crisan.
