Master of Science Industrial Engineering Fall 2005 Statement of Purpose
I am a Senior now in my under graduate program in Mechanical Engineering
at the reputed Birla Institute of Technology and Science. Education has been my supreme strength. I have always tried my best to excel in academics and produced good results consistently. I am particularly interested in mathematics and physics and their profound implications in day-to-day life have strongly inspired me to pursue undergraduate studies in engineering. Perhaps, my first biggest challenge towards this was to obtain admission in a reputed institute. In 2001, I qualified to BITS, Pilani securing a berth among the top 900 students from all over India. Education in BITS has given me a strong foundation in Engineering. The exhaustive nature of courses and a competitive grading system has instilled in me a desire to delve deeper into the subjects and deliver the best in me. My sophomore and junior years consisted of several courses on basic sciences and mathematics that have immensely helped me appreciate my core discipline courses and contribute to projects. Following these two years, I did an eight-week summer internship at a large fastener making industry. Sundram Fasteners Ltd, Chennai. I worked on the design of an autoloader for grinding machines in the Special Purpose Machine department. This first industrial experience has envisaged in me, the importance of Industrial Engineering and spurred me to consider this as my career and future. Among the various core courses I did in my senior year, I particularly enjoyed optimization and operations research. Other courses like Design of machine elements, Transport phenomena, computer-aided design, Dynamics of machines and vibrations have helped me obtain a very good understanding of mechanical engineering as a whole. I have scored excellent grades in my field courses standing in the top 5% in the class. To add to this, I also stood first in the class in Solid Mechanics and third in Production Techniques. To further my interest in what I have learnt before, I chose Flexible Manufacturing Systems as one of my electives and acquired good grade in it. As a part of the Practice School programme of our undergraduate curriculum, I am presently working as an intern for one full semester at Tata Motors, Pune - the leading automobile organization in India. Highlights of this experience are: -
Worked on methods for improving capacity of gear production
Learnt about Kaizen as a concept to achieve results Value Stream Mapping analyzed its importance scheduling/routing of jobs, inventory control and management
Employing Pokayoke, a foolproof mechanism to prevent the
recurrent aberrations in the processes
In my attempt to strengthen my theoretical knowledge, I will be taking a
course on Production, Planning and Control as my elective in the forthcoming semester. I am also looking forward to involving myself with a project on Decision support system It has been a very refreshing and enriching time during schooling and undergraduate education. What sets me apart from others is my determination to persevere at difficult situations. I do my work with utmost sincerity and dedication. My interests include sports and sketching. I have actively been a part of all academic, cultural and sport activities on campus, both as a participant and as a host. I have set a goal for myself to explore industrial engineering for specialization, advanced learning, and future career, through graduate studies. I have an ardent desire to pursue my graduate program in your esteemed university, expecting be richly benefit from an extremely dedicated faculty, extensive research facilities and an environment endowed with a plethora of academic activities. I do hope that my academic accomplishments, test scores, and my exposure to industry practice may be viewed favorably for admission to your graduate school, for pursuing a masters program in mechanical engineering. I do hope that I may be offered space in your graduate school. I assure that I will strive hard to match the high standards set by your university, and complete the graduate program successfully, earning good credits, and contributing my bit to the class room. Thank you Sudharsan Ravi

am working in the gear manufacturing division, on improving the capacity of gear production. I have extensively learnt about Kaizen and have used this concept to achieve my results. I have also worked on Value stream mapping and fully analyzed its importance in scheduling and routing of the jobs, and inventory control management. I have also got acquainted to some concepts of Supply chain management. Continuing with this, I will be employing Pokayoke, a foolproof mechanism to prevent the recurrent aberrations in the processes. under the guidance of Mr.S.S.Deshmukh. I have gained practical knowledge and an understanding of the various methodologies adopted by a big industrial organization like this. I immensely value my contribution to the growth of an organization and this has been the impetus for me to pursue a postgraduate study in the field of Industrial Engineering, which I firmly believe is indispensable for acquiring a deeper insight and to make original and worthwhile contribution to this field.
