STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

From my childhood I have been an inquisitive and enthusiastic learner. I have always
strived to learn new concepts. Science and technology really fascinated me. Hence I had
decided right from my schooling that engineering is the stream that would help me realize
my goals and aspirations.
I had always had an avid interest in the field of mechanical engineering from the days of
my school. As a child I had a penchant towards speeding cars and fighter jets and the
engines that ran them. When I was in school my history teacher taught us about the
industrial revolution which took place all around the world in the early nineties. I
wondered as to how people could be so inventive and imaginative. How could they
develop and build such powerful machines? Moreover how could they manage such a
large number of people working under a single system? This led to an interest in the field
of Mechanical engineering as a whole and Industrial engineering in part. This interest
slowly developed into a passion and I had made up my mind that Mechanical engineering
was going to be my area of undergraduation.
Coming from a family of engineers and technocrats I was encouraged by my family
members to pursue my interests. Education was given top preference over everything
else. The values and principles thought by my parents helped me realize this ambition. I
scored 93.4% in my twelfth grade examination which placed me among the toppers in my
class. My teachers were really supportive and always encouraged me to work hard and
stay focused. Due to my excellent grades I got into one of the premier institutions in the
city Sri Venkateswara College Of Engineering. As intended I had taken up
mechanical engineering as my area of study.
It was here in my college that my interests towards industrial engineering blossomed. We
had a number of core subjects in our curriculum such as Production technology I & II,
Engineering economics and energy management and Operational research which
really fascinated me towards the field of industrial engineering and operational research.
My interactions with my professors elucidated me about the interesting aspects of the
subject and I was keen to pursue my higher education in the field of operational research.
My college has the distinction of sending the most number of students for higher
education in the United States every year and it was through my seniors that I learned
about the benefits and advantages of education in America. It was then that I decided that
I should do my higher studies in the field of Operation research in United States. I am
confident that the courses I have learnt in my undergraduate level will help me
immensely in pursuing a Masters degree in this highly sophisticated field of Operation
research.
Operational research is one of the key areas of study in Industrial engineering. Industrial
engineering relates itself to the optimization of four Ms MAN, MACHINE, METHOD
and MONEY and Operational research plays an all important role in providing problems

with optimum solutions. Optimization is a never ending need for any industry and
Operational research I believe is the best tool for this purpose. I have undergone in plant
training (leading to my project) in an ISO organization - M\s Alcaast India Ltd. The
training program I underwent gave me a comprehensive in sight into the real time
problems faced by an organization and the requirement for optimization in every sector.
Alcaast India manufactures a wide range of precision products catering to the automotive
industry. Some of the products they make are fork shifts, cover oil pumps, pinion,
flywheel, armature shaft, clutch shaft etc I have done an analysis on the rejection rate
of the products of the company. I have studied the rejection trends of various die casting
materials like fork shifts and cover oil pumps. I have then worked on identifying the
reason for the high percentage of rejection rate in these products. I will be doing my final
year project in the same organization in the field industrial engineering. I am confident
that this project will be of great help in my quest for gaining knowledge and I genuinely
believe that this will keep me in good stead to pursue my post graduation degree in this
field. As I am involved with a group of three in the project I understand the importance of
team work and group co ordination which are vital traits to build ones carrier.
I strongly believe that the infrastructure and facilities on offer at your university would
help me immensely in augmenting my knowledge of the subject and keep me in good
stead for doing research in this vast field of Operational research. Hard work is never a
constraint and I am sure that I possess the perseverance and intellectual ability needed for
my endeavor. Under the able guidance of your expert faculty I am confident that if given
an opportunity I will be able to live up to your expectations. Getting admission into your
