Travers Smith lower ground floor caf proposal - Alexander Devereux

In my pervious proposal for Travers Smith LLP Blank Canvas Prize I wanted to
create a painting mimicking the track layout that can be found in the surrounding
area as inspiration to make an abstract painting similar to some of my current
works. I felt it was important to use the locality of Travers Smith and the
architectural history found within the area to make the work.

For this 8 metre x 2.5 metre wall I am proposing to design an architectural

drawing that exploits the ornate layout of railway tracks, past, present and
future, which exist within the surrounding area of the Travers Smith building.
However, instead of having a rusted background as found in my paintings, I would
like to incorporate the style of my large sculptures to make an architectural
drawing. This two dimensional work will act as a gateway, celebrating the
industrial history of the area. I envisage that the viewer would see the
overwhelming line of the structure made up of ornate curves that reflect the
railway tracks layout beneath Travers Smith. On standing closer to the drawing
the details of the fictional structure will be revealed, with every rivet being
represented.

My inspiration derives from Victorian architectural drawings, specifically Brunels

Paddington Station plans that I have a special affinity with. Having grown up just
outside London, this station was where I arrived and it was the backdrop to many
of my experiences. My current respect towards the building and the space it
creates derive from its purpose not being limited to just a place for trains to

arrive, but to act as a grand gateway into London and the Great Western Railway
(GWR). I hope the drawing would act in a similar way in the cafe, inspiring the
people as they occupy the space.

The drawing will be digitised with Adobe Illustrator; this software uses vectors
as apposed pixels enabling me scale the work without losing any definition. I
usually make computer drawings as plans for my sculptures and installations
and I relish the opportunity to make a large printable work using this method.
Working alongside the printers recommended by the architectural firm we would
be able to gain the correct quality and finish for the designated space and its
lighting.

Timeline

Should you accept this proposal for the caf wall I would aim to provide you
with three to four studies for your consideration and approval by the beginning
of September. Following on from your feedback I would make the necessary
edits to the approved drawing so that it can be completed and made available to
be printed by mid September.
