1. Often, it is more convenient to express Planks spectral energy density as an energy per range d of
wavelength. Show that Plancks formula in terms of wavelength is given by :

2. Derive the Wien Displacement Law :

-3

m T = 2.898 x 10 m-K
of maximum thermal emission of electromagnetic energy from a body of

relating the wavelength m

temperature T.
Hint : Set = , use !! + 5 = 1 and then show that x 4.965 is the solution.
II. Photoelectric Effect

3. Light of wavelength 300 nm is incident on a metal plate. Photoelectrons are produced moving as fast as
0.002 c.
A ) What is the work function of the metal ?
B ) What is the threshold wavelength for this metal ?
4. Light of wavelength 590 nm is barely able to eject electrons from a metal plate. What would be the
speed of the fastest electrons ejected by light of one third the wavelength (1/3 of 590 nm) ?
5. If illuminated with light of wavelength 520 nm, photoelectrons are ejected from a metal target with the
5
highest speed at 1.78 x 10 m/s.

A ) What wavelength of light is needed to give a maximum speed of 4.81 x 10 m/s ?
B ) From the work function, guess the material of the target.
