Course Intent
To provide users with no prior knowledge of Actix
theoretical understanding of Actix capabilities
To focus mainly on basic features rather than on
implementation of macros and usage of advanced
features
To Show how the Actix RVS suite is used in practical
tasks related to Nokia UMTS projects
To provide the users with confidence in the usage of Actix
by mean of practical exercises

Getting Started
Actix is a Post-Processing
tool
Input:
Tracer data: NEMO, TEMS, Qvoice
Scanner Data
Traffic records (switch traces), e.g.
Ericsson, Motorola
Protocol analyser data A, Abis, Gb
interfaces e.g. Nethawk, Tektronix

ACTIX
SOLUTIONS

RVS Suite
Suitable to analyze measurements of the UMTS radio
interface
Support a large number of vendor/standard file formats
for DT, trace, protocol analysers
Provides results in a wide variety of formats
Good user interface (easy to adapt)
High level of customisation ability
Structurised data presentation capabilities
Fast overview analysis with pre-defined reports

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Installation
Support Windows 2000 and Windows XP operation
systems
System spec. has a great impact on peformance
e.g. 3GHz processor with 1 Gb Ram is good !!
1.5GHz processor with 512Mb Ram is enough if not
big amount of data is processed
During installation
installation of MapX OCX modules takes time, be
patient
Post installation
No need to re-boot

Importing Network Element

Automatic import
This feature is very useful when having cell data
changing quite often, which is s very common situation in
a project:
From Menu Cells -> Network Explorer we can manage
our database of cells and sites.

24

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Labels for Sites and Cells

Just like in Mapinfo we can define which field to be used
for labels both for Sites and cells. Usually for sites the
Site Name is predefined. For Cells the Cell ID is
predefined and it is convenient to change it to Scrambling
Code (SC)
Labels can be changed from Layer Control

Open Data files - Scanner

After importing a file we can
navigate thru the attributes in the
workspace navigator
Both Scanner and Tracer
(NEMO) are used for
mesurements. Actix can handle
both of them
Attributes can be conveniently
displayed in different forms and
combined

Most Important Attributes

Ec/io of Best Server (interference
level)
RSCP of Best Server (power
level)
Scrambling code of Best Server
(dominance plot)

Notice that the BEST

SERVER (Nth Nth Best) is
defined and sorted always by
the best Ec/Io

elements are now
visible on the map

is very convenient
for displaying
measurements from
a topological point
of view

Modify Ranges And Colors

Right-click on the desired map

element (in this case: RSCP) - >

defined
When the dialog window is closed
settigs must be saved.

Emulated 3GPP Attributes

These are based on settings for
SHO parameters which can be
edited in
Tools -> Preferences

and then:
General settings -> WCDMA

We can thus set the same

paramenters which are in the
Network

Syncronization can be activated from Tools ->

Preferences (Auto Sync to stream)
It is not enabled by default: computing power consuming
Charts, Tables and Maps may display same attributes or
different ones

42

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Export Maps and Charts

MAPS: There are two options from export.
Right click on the map and select export map. The map can be
exported as a plain picture file
Click on Layout on the map window and export as project
document

CHARTS: Also here there are two choices:

Right-click on the chart and select Image Export....
Click on Copy on the chart window and record the image on the
clipboard

44

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Open NEMO File

In menu 3G we can find the same
attributes as in the scanner
measurements
We dont have the concept of best
server in tracer measurements.
Instead we have active set and
monitored set
Same Attributes can have different
name and be found in different
location
What is impotant here is the TX
power which is not present in the
Scanner

45

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Open NEMO File (2)

In the menu Pilot Measurements

we find individual SC measurements.

46

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Open NEMO File (3)

The menu Dedicated Radio Link
contains logical measurements about
KPIs

47

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Open NEMO File (4)

The menu Uu_RRCcontains
informations about signalling
BCCH-BCH signaling flows while
the UE is in idle mode
UL-CCCH and DL-CCCH signalling
flows while the UE is in Cell-FACH
state
UL-DCCH and DL-DCCH signalling
flows while the UE is in Cell-DCH
state

48

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Open NEMO File (5)

Event data contains logical event
about call establishment and
Handover as well as PDP context
activation for PS calls
Statistic Data contains information
about delays
These two sets of attributes are
suitable for analyzing KPIs

49

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Adding Attributes to favourites

You can Add To Favourites those
attributes which are used more
frequently
In order to have the attributes
saved in Favourites it is necessary
to save the workspace befor exiting
Actix

Signalling and Protocol Stack

Message Browser and Protocol Stack Browser are useful
tools for displaying the signalling and the sequence of
events for the NEMO trace
Typical signalling sequence which need to be analysed
are: Call Setup and Handover Loop

displayed in detail in the right part
2. Signalling event are indicated with RRC UL or RRC DL
3. Some event are traced from the mobile but they are not
signalling in this case Ec/No measurements
4. THe red bar indicates the extension of the script of each
element
5. This is raw messaging. Knowledge of the protocol is
needed to identify important elements (in this case,
event e1a)

Protocol Stack Browser

54

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Protocol Stack Browser (2)

Protocol Stack Browser shows only the signalling.
In the upper part messages are displayed and associated
to L3 events
Protocol Stack Browser is an easier tool for browsing the
signalling
It can be syncronized with Maps Charts and Tables

55

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Superstreaming
It is reccomended not to have very long logfiles when collecting data
Smaller logfiles can be recombined with the superstream tool

56

NOKIA Actix User Trainning/Module1.PPT / 01.08.2004 / NN

Superstreaming (2)
Tools -> Create Superstream
Logfiles can be selected
individually
Superstream is available in the
workspace browser
Superstreming does not create a
bigger logfile but rather combine
the existing data using pointers.
