Modals (Ventures Unit 9): Day 2

Context:

-Adult World Relief ClassLevel: Advanced Beginning


Age: Adult
Length: 1:30 hr
Background knowledge: Some have taken English classes before. Most are fluent in their L1.
Spiritual awareness: Muslim, Yazidi, Christian, Mandaean, possibly Hindu too?
Learning affinity: Love interacting. Good participation. Experience with Ventures 2.
Cultural Background: Farsi, Spanish, Nepali, Burmese, Arabic
Cultural Affinity: Like American culture, but this isnt the point of the class.
Social Class: Refugee
Objectives: By the end of this lesson
-SWBAT make polite requests using some common modals
-SWBAT complete a summative dialogue on modals and fixing household problems

WARM-UP/REVIEW: (15 min)


-WELCOME: Welcome everyone. How are you? I have a story from yesterday that I
want to share with you. I want you to listen to the story and try to understand what is
happening. After that, I will ready it again. Ok?

Yesterday, I was washing the dishes. I do not have a dishwasher, so I wash my dishes by
hand. When I was washing, all of a sudden, the water started to go up, it started to rise.
Very quickly, I turned off the water and called my landlord.
Hello Barry. I have a problem, my sink is clogged. Can you unclog my sink?
Sure! Id be happy to. I will come in 5 minutes.
After that, Barry came to my apartment and unclogged my sink. It was a messy job.
-Activity #1: (T-S: Class/Individual) T tells story
-1st time: T reads. Ss just listen. Try to understand what is happening in the the
story.
-2nd time: T reads with ppt up. Ss just listen.
-3rd time: T goes over words with class while reading
-T Review Vocab: puts up ppt of broken household appliances
-T Reviews how to make a polite request: puts up ppt of table (pg 112, White book)
-T goes over HW: Ventures 2 WB pg 104
PRESENT (T-S: Class) (10-15 min)
Transition: Now class, lets look at a real conversation with a plumber.
-Activity #2: (T-S: Class)
1. T puts up ppt of conversation. Read with Tom.
2. Explain different parts of the conversation. (1-5)
PRACTICE (S: Individual) Structured practice (20 min)
Transition: Now I have for you some examples of conversations where you talk with a
plumber, a repair man, or your landlord about things that are broken in your house.
3. T models examples of conversations with different problems on board.
THEN passes out WS
*New examples Refrigerator, Toilet*
4. Debrief: T goes over blanks with Ss

REVIEW: (5 mins)
-T reviews conversation aspects
-T reviews WS examples
Transition: Ok, now we are going to practice with conversation with a partner. 1 person is the
landlord. The other person is you. After you are done, switch. Then find a new partner.
5. Ss go around class and practice dialogue with other Ss (10 mins)
PRODUCE (S-S: Partner) (20 mins)
Activity #3: Authentic Dialogue

Ok, go back to your seat and partner with someone next to you. I am going to be pictures on
the board. 1 person is the plumber, repair man or the landlord. The other person is calling for
help. Try not to use anything for help. But I have a help sheet for you. (Handout help sheet. Tell
Ss to fold the piece of paper.) You will only see this on the board.
-T puts ppt pictures. Ss at table practice with partners the dialogue they just filled
out. Ss can use WK as help. Switch.
-ASSESSMENT: T goes around monitoring dialogue. Each group will get 1
picture to demonstrate their progress.
CLOSURE (1 min)
-I want to say thank you to all of you this week. You did well learning how to ask for help
