PartialFractions
Thissectiondoesntreallyhavealottodowiththerestofthischapter,butsincethesubjectneedstobe
coveredandthiswasafairlyshortchapteritseemedlikeasgoodaplaceasanytoputit.
So,letsstartwiththefollowing.Letssupposethatwewanttoaddthefollowingtworational
expressions.
Whatwewanttodointhissectionistostartwithrationalexpressionsandaskwhatsimplerrational
expressionsdidweaddand/orsubtracttogettheoriginalexpression.Theprocessofdoingthisis
calledpartialfractionsandtheresultisoftencalledthepartialfractiondecomposition.
Theprocesscanbealittlelongandonoccasionmessy,butitisactuallyfairlysimple.Wewillstartby
tryingtodeterminethepartialfractiondecompositionof,
wherebothP(x)andQ(x)arepolynomialsandthedegreeofP(x)issmallerthanthedegreeofQ(x).
Partialfractionscanonlybedoneifthedegreeofthenumeratorisstrictlylessthanthedegreeofthe

denominator.Thatisimportanttoremember.
So,oncewevedeterminedthatpartialfractionscanbedonewefactorthedenominatorascompletelyas
possible.Thenforeachfactorinthedenominatorwecanusethefollowingtabletodeterminethe
term(s)wepickupinthepartialfractiondecomposition.

Thefirstthingtodoisfactorthedenominatorasmuchaswecan.
