L._ This exam is open book, open notes. You may use a calculator but it may not be shared with
anyone else during the exam.
2. Show all work for partial-credit consideration.
3. Please express all numeric answers as if you were publishing in a technical journal. Numbers
need be only 3 significant digits. Mantissas should be between 1.00 and 999 and exponents
should be a multiple of three (engineering notation). Express the exponent as a metric prefix
(Mega, kilo, milli, nano, pico, etc.) together with the units (volts, ohms, amperes, etc). Refer to
the handout “Number Formats for Engineers” if you need further explanation.
4, Figures and diagrams must be clear and precise. Sloppy, illegible circuit diagrams and small-
signal models with unlabeled or unconnected components or with ambiguous node connections,
(crossing wires without dots indicating a connection), and graphs without axis labels will lose
points,
5. Time allotted for the exam is 90 minutes,
6. The last problem is a take-home problem and is due at the next class period following the exam,

output current for linear operation is limited to a magnitude of 10 mA, what will be maximum output,
voltage magnitude that is applied to the speaker? (Nore: You may assume that the loading effects of

look at this problem tonight in case you need to ask questions about it
Put your name on the top of the last page in the space provided, remove the last page from the
exam booklet, and take it home with you.
Be sure to show all work for partial credit consideration. No partial credit will be given if work is
not shown,
“Judicious” approximations are encouraged to simplify calculations.
Bring the completed problem 10 with you to the next class on Wednesday for those taking the
exam Monday evening, or Friday for those taking the conflict exam Wednesday evening,
Good luck to all!
This exam is to be representative of your own work only.
If you have any questions about this problem, you must ask only your instructor. Bither ask questions
now during the exam or else ask them via email. In order to give ali students an equal opportunity, email
questions and responses will be posted on ANGEL for al students to view, after removing personally
identifiable information from the questions.EE 311 Exam 1 Fall 2010
Problem 10
120 pis.)
For maximum reliability, the junction temperature of a power MOSFET must be limited to +150 ° C. The
MOSFET has a junction-to-case thermal resistance, 0, of 0.188 ° C/W and is attached to a heat sink and
used in a circuit where its drain current is 8 A and where Vps is 10 V.
A. If the circuit's ambient temperature range is ~40 to +60 °C, find the required heat sink thermal
resistance to ensure that the maximum safe junction temperature is not exceeded
B. Aavid Thermalloy 64635 extruded aluminum heat sink material is used with natural convection
cooling (no fan or forced air). What is the required length of the heat sink?
Sketch a thermal model and show all calculations.
*Bonus (5 pts]
‘The required heat sink in part B is deemed too costly and too large for the intended application. Instead
we consider using a 3-inch length of Aavid Thermalloy 64635 and a fan for forced-convection cooling,
Estimate (from graphical data provided on the heat sink data sheet) the required air flow rate in linear feet
