Unit Title: Los Sistemas Educativos

Unit Summary:
Students will learn how the education system of those countries rated as top in the PISA assessment work
and will be able to compare and contrast with their own education system. They will understand what are
the key features of a successful education system and be able to decide what needs to be done in their
own education system to improve it. Students will read articles on the education systems of Spain, Finland
and different countries in Latin America. They will be able to compare and summarize the best practices
for each of those countries.
Students will also learn about a unique music program called El Sistema created in Venezuela in 1975.
They will watch a documentary called Tocar y Luchar. They will also research how this music program
created in Venezuela has been able to expand and is now being implemented in the United States and
other countries around the world.

Students will answer the question Qu te gusta del sistema educativo de los Estados Unidos? (What do you like
about the education system in the U.S.?. They will post their answer to a padlet board and then there will be a class
discussion on the opinions.
Students will work in groups to create a word cloud to complete the phrase El sistema educativo de los Estados
Unidos debera. (The education system in the U.S. should). In groups students will brainstorm about key words
to express what they would like to see reform or change in their own education system. They will create a word
cloud using Wordle and then post their word cloud in a Padlet board to share with the class.
Students will read the following articles in Spanish and will complete a list of vocabulary words and questions from
the articles. They will have to submit their work to CANVAS and will have a class discussion on the articles.

Week Three: Las diez claves de un sistema educativo/10 keys to an education system

Using the infographics from Aula Planeta students will read about the 10 keys to the education of the following
countries: South Korea, Finland, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, and Poland.
In groups, they will decide which 10 keys they find the most interesting and possibly would like to see that happen
in their own education system.
The group leaders will create a list with those 10 keys they discuss in their groups and then they will share that list
with the class.
In groups, students will identify key issues or themes that are recurrent in their list and will be possible points for
change or reform in their education system.
In groups, students will create an interactive image in ThingLink that will present to the class the 5 issues/themes
that their group would like to change. Each group will submit their interactive image to a Padlet board.
As a class, we will compile a list of issues/themes to be reform/change to be use later in week 4 for the infographics.

Week Four: El Sistema-la msica como medio para el cambio social/El Sistema-Music as a means for social change

Students will be introduced to El Sistema, a social and cultural music program created in Venezuela to teach music.
They will watch the documentary Tocar y Luchar and possibly, if times permits, La tierra de las mil orquestas.
Students will read articles both in favor and against El Sistema and will be able to access the websites for El Sistema
USA, El Sistema Europe and El Sistema Venezuela. This will be done in small group, assigning each group a different
article and later will have a debate to argue in favor or against according to the article they read.

Students will work in groups to choose on of the issues/themes that they would like to reform/change in the U.S.
education system. They will create an infograph using infogr.am or easel.ly to present their ideas/proposal to
change that particular issue. They will present their findings to the class. They must use information they have
learned from other countries to propose real changes.
Students will write a persuasive essay in Spanish to convince a member of the school board to either create a
program like El Sistema in Alachua County or to oppose to the creation of the program. Students will write the
essay at home.

Hook:

Students will be given copies of the infographics from


Aula Planet and will be ask to seat in groups to read
and share what they find most interesting.

Equip:
In groups, students will discuss and decide which 10
keys they find the most interesting and applicable to
the United States. The group leader will write down the
list and will present it to the class. After a class
discussion on the 10 keys each group presented;
students will go back to their group to identify 5
themes/issues they would like to see apply in the

be creating to propose specific changes to the
education in their county.
