1. Do you see the institution of the Family differently now that watched "Filipinas"? Did
anything you learned surprise you?
The institution of family in the movie Filipinas is still very much like the typical
Filipino family of today. All of the children reside on their mothers home and helped her
when the mother got old. Still a typical Filipino family because there are 2 family members
who work abroad to help their own family. They sacrifice themselves to help their family in
order to have a good and prosperous life.
The one thing that surprised me is that in the movie, the children of Mother Filipinas
have different jobs and outlook in life. For a family, the kind of variety where there is an
OFW, a military guy, a businesswoman and an activist is rare. Most likely a Filipino family
focuses on the roots of the parents or near from it. If the parents are both doctors, most likely
the children will have a degree in medicine. The kind in the movie is rare where the children
took different jobs and outlook that leads to conflict in their beliefs.
2. Which of the 4 major perspectives on family strikes you as the most meaningful after
watching the movie? Why?
Of the 4 perspectives, the one that strikes me most is the conflict perspective. Conflict
because the inequality in wealth and power is present among the children of Mother
Filipinas. There are successful one some are not successful. One of them works for the
military and another one is an activist, who clearly have different perspective in terms of
what they want for their country. It strikes me most because, as a family, all of its members
should unite and help each other and leave their differences outside family matters. If one of
them is successful, he should be the one to carry most of the burden and help the ones who
are not successful to become succeful.
3. Which of the 4 major perspectives would be most helpful to you in studying family as a
social institution?

From the four perspective, the most helpful is the functionalist perspective. It states the
role of each member of the family and their role in the society. The parents should create a
wonderful environment for their offspring to grow and have some good values in them. The
children will become the reason why their family has a strong bond and doesnt think of
becoming a broken family. A family satisfies all the emotional and security needs a person
can have to become a whole person, not having difficulties in satisfying those needs.
