Childcare Program Education Assessments.

Objectives
Increase access to educational support programs in the community.

Summary
Cape Towns Childcare progam, now based at Ikhayalethemba sanctuary where the nursery is run from, has seen volunteers working closely with the children to develop their early education.
To ensure the volunteers are focusing on the areas most needing help, and in order to ensure the children and fully prepared for Grade R, assessments of each child have been made.

Report

The assessments were broken down into the following categories to determine the level of recognition and
understanding of each:
Numbers 1 20
Alphabet A Z
Shapes
Colours
All children at the nursery, as well as Ikhayalethembas resident children who attend the nursery, were assessed on these 4 categories to determine the level of each child.

The results have helped us to see what areas require the most focus and has allowed us to place children
more accurately in classes with others at a similar level.
We can now assess the childrens further progress in preparation for Grade R and it has also created a baseline by which we can test the children's learning in the future.

The graph below reflects the average score of the children overall.

From the individual scores, the results have shown that those children who have been working with GVI
volunteers for a longer period of time (i.e Ikhayalethembas resident children and some long standing nursery
children) scored significantly higher on all the assessments.
This clearly reflects GVIs successful educational impact through the Childcare program.

Repeated assessments from now will ensure continued progress and focus on the necessary areas of development.
